The Thracian Chersonessos had more than one natural port on the coasts of the Hellespont and the Aegean Sea. These ports were located at the mouth of the valleys formed by the rivers that had reached the Aegean Sea and the Hellespont. The ports were connected with each other by the networks that the valleys had formed. These geographical characteristics of the peninsula were one of the qualities sought for the market places of the Byzantine period. Historical data also indicate this. The market places on the peninsula were taken under conservation with the long wall on the isthmus reconstructed against the attacks from the land in the era of Justinian. Written data show that Justinian had defensive structures constructed on the Peninsula, simultaneously with the “long wall”. However, this is not supported with archaeological data. This creates a serious problem primarily in understanding the military geography and defensive system of the Peninsula. To contribute to the settlement of this problem, at the first stage, it was intended to determine and document the defensive structures of the peninsula on the coast of the strait. At this stage, traces of the defensive structures in Gallipoli, Koila, Madytos and Eleius were detected and documented, respectively. In the present study, it was aimed to evaluate the archaeological data we detected in the Byzantine castle in Sestos-Akbaş on the Yalova Valley and the results we obtained from the archaeogeophysical studies.

This paper focuses on the historical drama Ryoma-den broadcasted in the Japanese National Channel. Throughout the article the style of narration of the chaotic period in Japanese history in which the main character of the series Sakamoto Ryoma also lived will be taken into consideration in the context of patriotism and emergence of modern Japanese identity. Furthermore how the style of narration in the series coincides with the minsushi style of historiography writing in Japan will also be taken into account. In this respect it can be argued that the way Ryoma as a low rank samurai in the social hierarchy depicted as a human being capable of changing the course of history is highly in accordance with the mentioned type of historiography. The series can be thought significant in the sense that it acts as a medium to reconstuct the history anew by exposing the transition of the charaters embedded with feudal pieties to national citizens. While the series focus on a period when a proud nation was born from the feudal ruins, the theme highlights the devotions and sacrifices of the young people carrying a dream to modernize the society and its corrupted institutions. Though most of the young people were terrified at the beginning of their encounter with the Western Powers, soon enough they become captured by their passion towards the unknown. They started to accumulate the knowledge of the West keeping their proud with their nation a still. Throughout the narrative, the themes of patriotism, solidarity, the reaction and attitude towards the West, and emergence of a new Japanese identity is the frequently covered and the way these themes are taken into considerations shows a great deal about the current representations of a recreated past.

It seems that the environmental education aspect of Islam is not so much expressed and not found too much voice, eventhough Islam's relation with the environment is scientifically quite explained in papers presented in the “International Environment and Religion” Symposium, held by Faculty of Theology of Istanbul University in May 14 to 15 in 2008. In this study, the issue of “ based on from which perspective the environmental awareness and education in Islam was to be debated?” will be brought to the foreground. Of environmental awareness and education in Islam based on what issues have been addressed and its subject is intended to explain how the people is provided with the environmental conscious. The purpose of the study is to try to put forth and demonstrate how the environmental awareness and environmental values in Islam has been embraced in terms of education. The method here is to clarify the issues merely by presenting the main frame of environment education in Kur’an and Hadiths. The environmental education just started to entering to the history of science in 1970 and it is a juvenil scientific perception planned the first time in this date of “World Day”. However, environmental education in Islam, located on the first verse of the Quran is an issue. The environmental awareness and education in Islam, if the order of revelation of the Qur'an as observed, it should be emphasized that the Ayats of Muddessir (74/4-5) are the 9th and 10th ayats as the sequence of the first verses revealed. In these ayats, "dress kept clean and from of all dirts are cleansing " by saying the emphasis is on environmental education. Even in the teachings of Hz. Prophet, He has been trying to create environmental awareness as parallel to this matter. As relevant to this issue, He had emphasized the principals on environmental education by expressing the sayings such as “ Plant the seedlings in your hand, even if you know that the doomsday will take place tomorrow.” , “And you too, keep your yards of homes clean and keep it clean the area you reside.” etc.

In this study landslide sensitivity has been formed between Bahçeköy and Elmalı parts of Göynük Valley by using geographical information systems together with Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) used in landslide sensitivity analysis, slope, elevation, aspect, geological features, curvature, distance from tectonic faults and river systems and active landslide zones. Geological features and tectonic faults have been obtained through scanning the maps, prepared concerning the research area by Mineral Research and Exploration Institute, transferring to CBS and digitising them. The geomorphological features of the area have been produced from Digital Elevation Model which is obtained by digitising the 1/25000 scale maps. The satellite data of research area were recorded on September 19, 2011 by Landsat TM. The plantless areas have been determined by using the 4th and 3rd band values of satellite data with the formula of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index. The information picked up from satellite images, geological and geomorphological features have been evaluated together with literature research and for research areas highest, high, medium, low, sensitive and insensitive areas for landslides have been determined. According to the data picked up in this research, the rate of medium landslide-sensitive areas are 45%, the rate of high landslide-sensitive areas are 25% in Göynük Valley. Accordingly, the landslide sensitivity of Göynük Valley is high. The freeway of Bingöl-Erzurum throughout the Göynük Valley has been built on areas where lanslide-sensitivity is highalong a long distance. The frequent landslides that took place at various parts of the freeway indicates the imperfections about the area where it was built. The Kürik potable water pipeline that meets the freshwater need of Bingöl in Göynük Valley was also built on those parts where landslide sensitivity is high. Kalencik, Göynük and Elmalı villages, which are situated on that area where the landslide sensitivity is high, are the most densely populated areas in the Göynük Valley. As the problems that landslides creates are much, while the human activities are being planned, the landslide sensitivity should be considered. The areas where landslide sensitivity is too high and highshould not be open to settlement, the existing settlements sould be transferred, and the location of the freeway on landslide sensitive area should be changed. To meet the potable water need alternative sources should be put into use.

In interaction with the natural environment since the very beginning, human beings are in a struggle for gaining benefits from the nature despite its effects and manipulating the nature. Human-nature interaction may vary depending on physical characteristics of the geographical space and time. Resources provided by any geographical area are influential on societies’ not only economic activities and cultural tissue but also relationships with other societies. Similarities and differences between geographical areas affect lifestyle and culture of communities accordingly. Thus, geography might account for similarities and differences between material and spiritual values of communities. Architectural and archaeological remnants of predecessors in a certain region or landscape are among the most important material culture assets reflecting and evidencing influences of geographical facts on predecessor civilizations. One of the most appropriate representations of geographical space in economic, cultural and political activities is Yesemek Quarry and Sculpture Mill. It was first opened during the Hittites time and played an important role in centuries-lasting cultural interactions between the Hittites and Mesopotamian civilizations. Yesemek Quarry and Sculpture Mill remained active at least for five or six centuries from the 14th century B.C. and 8th century B.C, during which was the most important quarry and sculpture mill in the Middle East. The geographical landscape on which Yesemek Quarry and Sculpture Mill were located constitutes a good example for influence of geological structure on economic activities and culture. In this context, this study is carried out on the geographical space on which Yesemek Quarry and Sculpture Mill are located. The aim of the study is to find out the influence of the architectural works as material assets in the same region on cultural interaction between the Hittite State and Mesopotamian communities. In this way, both economic and commercial importance of the area will be underlined and its tourism potentials will be discussed.

Today’s increase in environmental problems and their growing presence on our agenda have led to a greater awareness of both consumers and companies. One of the main influences on the purchasing behaviour of both current and potential green consumers’, i.e. those who have environmental consciousness is whether or not the product benefits the environment during production, distribution even at the post consumption process. Companies have therefore adopted green promotional activities to present the product or service as meeting the environmental expectations of consumers, in order to achieve a long-term competitive advantage and create, maintain or present image of the company as environmentally sound. As an element of green marketing communication, green advertising is an important tool for the companies to increase or preserve sales of green goods or services. To achieve these objectives companies mention various messages that contain environmental messages in their advertisements. The subject of this study is “green advertisements.” The companies use green advertisements for environmental claims and messages. The purpose of this study is to analyse the relationship between environment and advertisement, based on the notion of the green advertisement, which is one of the elements of green promotional activities; to examine how this relationship is reflected in magazine advertisements, and in this context to present some of the features of green advertising. To this end, 49 samples, which are published in Eko IQ magazine dated March-April 2012 and May-June 2013, have been analysed using the quantitative content analysis method. Within this context, how companies use the level of greenness, green claims and environmental concern as an advertising appeal has been presented.

Students’ abilities to concentrate, to use the time efficiently, to believe in themselves, to correlate between information units, to formulate self-learning objectives and strategies, to reach self-learning objectives and organizational ability are closely related to self-regulation. Self-regulation which is thought as the most important determiner for success and academic achievement is defined and modelled with a lot of theoretical perspective. The purpose of this study is to determine similarities and differences of the definitions on self-regulation, which is extremely important for people in lifelong learning, the theories that models are based on, and the qualities of the models by examining all of them with a comparative approach. Different self-regulation models have been developed in literature. Of all these developed models, Zimmerman (1998) self-regulated learning theory, Pintrich (2000) self-regulated learning strategies, Winne (1996) self-regulation model, Borkowski (1996) process oriented model of metacognition, Boekearts (1996) model of adaptable learning and Kanfer’s (1970) three-stage model of self-regulation were investigated and identified the similarities and the differences. As a result, while Zimmerman, Pintrich, Kanfer and Boekaerts identify self-regulation as metacognitive process which implies the choice and usage of cognitive tactics and strategies which are necessary for learning. Moreover, it was concluded that models have differences in self-regulated learning stages; however, the stages of active participation, and observing and evaluating self-learning have similarities.

Love is an innate emotion directed towards someone or something with no expectations in return. It is among the existential reasons of human beings such as safety, shelter and food. Without love, neither the society and life nor the humanity can ever exist. Only through love one can learn how to live and how to share. Love is learning, touching, believing and making self-sacrifice. Children grow and develop with love. Therefore, it is of great importance that teachers have a developed sense of affection towards children. One of the influential persons in a child’s life is his/her teacher. Contemporary and democratic education necessitates that the love and affection for children need to be fostered in teachers. Turkish education system considers academic and technical knowledge enough for school success and passing the class. Yet, one of the very basic characteristics of being a teacher necessitates “affection for children”. The ones who don’t like children and spending time with them cannot be considered as an qualified teacher. This study aims at describing teachers’ affection for children and also to put out if there is a meaningful relation with this affection and demographic variables. Survey method was preferred in the study. A survey design provides a quantitative or numeric description of trends, attitudes, or opinions of a population by studying a sample of that population (Creswell, 2013:155). The Data source consists of 564 teachers (in different branches) assigned in Sivas city centre. Data was gathered through “Barnett Liking of Children Scale” and “Personal Information Form”. Data analysis was conducted via SPSS 17.00 package programme. Results show that there is a meaningful relation between the teachers’ sex and branch and their affection for children. No meaningful relation was found between affection for children and teachers’ age, work experience, marital status, and the number of children they have.

In works of Fazail (Virtues) type, in general, narrations describing the virtues of deeds, ‎prayer times, people, cities and nations were brought together. While those kinds of ‎narrations were included in sections entitled fazâil(virtues), manakib (anecdotes) and ‎khasais (personal traits) of musannaf (classified according to topics) type works ‎previously, they have been transformed into self-contained works according to their ‎subjects in the course of time. Of these, those related to the virtues of the Qur'an, the ‎Prophet, the Companions, Mecca and Medina are quite common.‎ In this context, we will handle a work of Ibn Sahin (d. 385), one of the hadith ‎scholars of the fourth century Hijri entitled Part on Fatima”s Virtues in which he ‎collected the narrations describing the virtues of Hadrat Fatima.Ibn Shahin, being one of ‎the closest friends of famous hadith scholar Dârekutnî (d. 385) has usually been ‎accepted as siqa (reliable) by hadith authorities. There has also been a mention of the ‎existence of a work named Juz Fadail-e Fatima which was attributed to his ‎contemporary al-Hakim al-Nishapuri (d. 405).Together with that work we can say that ‎Ibn Shahin”s this Juz is one of the first self-contained fazail books written about Hadrat ‎Fatima.‎ In this study we will examine how and how much space is given to narrations ‎describing the virtues of Hadrat Fatima in Musannaf type of works and we will try to ‎reveal how much Ibn Shahin followes them, what kind of style he uses and to what kind ‎of narrations he gives place in it. Also, by handling how many of of the narrations ‎describing the virtues of Fatima he included and excluded in his work we will also try to ‎determine his success at this point. Through the example of Hadrat Fatima forth we also ‎intend to make better known the sections on fadail (virtues) type in works and the self-‎contained works relevant to the subject.‎

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accordance of informative and fictional texts in 7th level Turkish coursebook in the sense of textuality criteria. For this purpose, accordance of textuality criteria of the texts in 7th level Turkish coursebook are evaluated according to the scale that Işeri (2010) suggested. In this study which document analysis is used, informative and fictional texts and poems in Turkish coursebook used by 7th grade students in Antalya are used as data source. Statement of problem of this study is defined as follows: "Are texts in 7th level Turkish coursebook appropriate in terms of textuality criteria?" Two texts from each theme in Ministry of Education Publishing (2012) and Elementary Turkish 7th level coursebook is defined as a sample. This study is counted significant because it determines the accordance of the texts in 7th secondary level Turkish coursebooks according to textuality criteria. In the findings of the study, informative and fictional texts in 7th secondary level Turkish coursebook are generally appropriate for textuality criteria except for readability status. When looking at readability status, texts are generally not "Independent Reading" which is the standard readability level for a 7th level student. Suggestions that can be made according to the results of the study are that readability status of the texts should match with the level of the students, that this reason should be taken into consideration while selecting texts, that understandability level of the texts which take place in the coursebooks should absolutely be checked and while selecting texts attention should be taken.

Teaching mathematics, which mathematicians have long laid great emphasis on, is still considered to be a source of difficulty. As prerequisite knowledge is intense in teaching mathematics, teaching mathematical relations should be taken into consideration in early education periods rather than in secondary school education. The knowledge of mathematical relations starts in early period with the relationship between geometric figures or numbers within the context of patterns and continues with the relationship between variables. The present study was carried out with pre-school teacher candidates in the Spring Term of the academic year of 2013-2014 to examine the extent of pre-school teacher candidates’ readiness for teaching the mathematical relations (A case from Dicle University). The collection of data and evaluation measures developed by (Umay, 2003) the six-question questionnaire was used. The results of the study revealed that according to the pre-school teacher candidates, mathematics is in every field of life and that they did not view mathematics as an ordinary course. While this was considered to be a positive situation, the fact that some of the teacher candidates considered certain daily words to be mathematical elements was found to be a negative situation. It is believed that this negative situation can be overcome via supplementary education to be given for introducing mathematics.

An Approach to the Use of the Concept of Makâm in Turkish Traditional Folk Music with regard to Edvâr Tradition

In Traditional Turkish Music, characteristics of melodies are manifested through melodic modes that are called makâm in Turkish. In this line of music, which has maintained its existence within the exercise system, the understanding of makâm has naturally undergone changes over the centuries. These changes are clearly seen between the edvârs -manuscripts of music theory presented in circles- of different centuries. Due to this reason, examining the various definitions of makâms, from the manuscript books of the past and from current sources, would provide information on the magnitude and sense of this change. Another importance of setting forth the change in the understanding of makâm is related with the introduction of a new perspective to the dilemma of makâm and melodic patterns referred to as ayak in the Traditional Turkish Folk Music. Although it had been named differently in the past centuries, within the terminology of the present century's "Turkish Folk Music" the melodic structure of music has been tried to be expressed with the term "ayak". The fact that some folk melodies cannot be exactly expressed in terms of makâms has been frequently presented as the reason for this. Our belief is that two fundamental matters underlying the problem are being omitted. The first of these is the change of understanding that took place in the definitions and therefore the setups of makâms. In other words, an understanding of scale -or "dizi" in Turkish-, which did not exist within the tradition but was later incorporated into the definitions of makâm, has been prevalent in the last century. The second matter is the concepts of "âvâze" and "şûbe" which although had been used in the past centuries, in time started to be mentioned less and less and eventually melted into the term of makâm. The remoteness of the melodies identified with the concepts of âvâze and şûbe, to today's understanding of makâm is obvious. Utilizing the melody models identified by these two terms in the examination of Turkish Folk Music melodies with regard to makâm may provide a significant ease in the solution of the problem that is being experienced.

The purpose of the study is to determine how the conventional group (cluster) work applied in the collaborative group work and traditional learning method affects the grammar success of the teacher candidates and to identify opinions of the candidates related to applications in the group that collaborative group work is applied. Therefore, in the research the mixed method is used that "quantitative" and "qualitative" techniques are applied together. In the quantitative aspects of research, control group quasi-experimental design based on the measurements of pre-test-post-test was used in order to determine the effects of collaborative group work on the teacher candidates' grammar success. "Semi-structured interview" technique from "qualitative" techniques was used in the determination of the opinions about collaborative group work. The study group consists of the 60 teacher candidates. Grammar Assessment Test (GAT) which was developed by the researcher containing 25 questions in the last form in order to measure grammar success (pre-test-post-test) of the experimental ( n=30) and control (n=30) students' group was used. Test the reliability studies were conducted and KR-20 coefficient was determined to be 0.80. In the analysis of the data obtained from Grammar assessment test pre-test-post-test applications, related samples t-test statistics was used when evaluating the results of the measurements of experimental or control groups and independent samples t-test statistics was used for the measurement of experimental and control groups. Semi-structured interview form was prepared by the researcher to determine the candidates' opinions about collaborative group work. By using this form, the interviews lasting for 60 minutes with each application group were conducted. Later, thematic content analysis was performed to the data recorded in the interviews and the data was first tabulated and interpreted. As a result of data analysis, it was determined that collaborative group work was more effective than conventional group work in the sense of improving grammar success. It was determined that while there was no meaningful difference in significance level (t=0,122; p>0,05) between experimental and control groups' grammar success in pre-test data, there was meaningful difference in significance level (t= 4,890; p<0,05) in favor of the experimental group that was applied collaborative group work in the final test. At the end of the thematic content analysis applied for the opinions on collaborative group implementation, almost all the teacher candidates have stated that they found collaborative group work useful and sufficient for grammar learning / teaching, they loved participating the activities and all the activities were entertaining and instructive.

The aim of the present study is to investigate the precipitation, temperature, and humidity characteristics of Beyşehir and thus to determine the vegetation period. Moreover, to reveal the relation with vegetation structure by determining the impact of important vegetation growth conditions on vegetation. Hence, the precipitation, temperature, and humidity data of 34 years kept by the Beyşehir meteorology station between 1975 and 2008 were used. Daily the precipitation, temperature, and humidity data was analyzed and thus the important factors on vegetation determined. Thus, winter is the season with the highest precipitation rate and it is mostly in form of snow and rain. Therefore, the precipitation regime is winter, spring, autumn and summer (WSAS). Summer temperatures reflect mostly the characteristics of continental climate. Precipitation, temperature, and humidity characteristics of Beyşehir are as much as the influence of geographical location also under the influence of topographical conditions. Whereas Beyşehir has the characteristics in terms of precipitation mainly Mediterranean climate conditions, in terms of temperature it reflects the characteristics continental climate. The vegetation period is limited with 220 days if the days with an average temperature above 8 centigrade are considered. The climate has during the winter months Mediterranean and during summer Central Anatolian climate characteristics. Depending on the altitude continental rate degree is increasing. Overall climate conditions indicate mainly a Mediterranean climate. Yet, since the basic Mediterranean climate is altered in this region, the climate bears the characteristics of a transition climate. Therefore, in the area of study the temperature and precipitation conditions have changed gradually and led to the

In Turkey where television broadcasts are produced by public and private institutions, women are the primary target audience of television broadcasts, because of this rate. In this context, television is subject to concrete interventions and it tries to attract attention of women with various programs. According to researches done by Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), half of women watch television programs for women broadcasted in the morning and during the day. According to a survey in 2009, mostly women between the ages of 26-33 who are married and who are primary school graduates watch television programs for women. Although such a great mass is targeted, it is assumed that in these television programs those women are presented who are subject to violence, rape and betrayal, which is rather a consumptive case than productive. It is considered that women in these programs are given the image of “victimized, poor and acquiescent” i

Ibn Khaldun, who lived in XIV. century, is a multifaceted Islamic thinker. He put forth to ideas at Kalam, Sufism, Hadith, Tafseer, Fıqh (Law) and Islamic philosophy which are in Islamic thinking areas. Besides he brought forward original ideas in the fields of sociology, politics and philosophy of history. When was examining the fields of thought, he tackled informations which can be determined his attitude of Epistemoloji, in different places and non-systematic way. He focused on the problems of episteme which are posibility, definition, sources, instrumentality, limit and value in Epistemoloji. In this context, he tried to put forward determinations about which his study areas can be understood more truthfully and episteme must be based on which value, as previous İslamic philosophers, theologians and sufis. Ibn Khaldun touched on sense, nous, revelation, dream and intuition as instrumentality of episteme also he examined that relation between magic, talisman, prophecy and epistemology. He tought that sense and nous are accepted in matters world, epistemes can be achieved with revelation and intuition in spiritual world. He seperated each other philisophical sciences which based upon intellect and religious sciences which based upon revelation. Ibn Khaldun don’t think that ways of obtaining information are an alternative to each other, considered the means of obtaining information subsidiary of a whole, stayed out of an attitude which based upon absolutization and degradation. Furthermore, he made a fuss about what are limits of instrumentality of episteme and value of episteme. He put forth the value of information with the principles as trueness, practicable, relevancy of religious and usefulness.

The goal of this research is to determine the misconceptions of students on the issue of biotechnology and genetic engineering and to research the contributions of prepared constructivist education approach based activities (5E activities) on learning topics conceptually and removing misconceptions. The study was carried out with pretest-post test control group quasi-experimental model method. The study group was made of the students of two 12th grade classes in Buca High school, Buca, İzmir. The control group contained 18 students while experiment group contained 19 students. Lessons were taught through activities in Biology class curriculum published in 2485 numbered Magazine of Bulletins on February, 1998, to control group students while lessons were taught to experiment group through activities with 5E method, according to constructivist approach. Pretest, post test, and conceptual understanding test –as delayed permanence test-, made of 14 open ended questions prepared by researchers, were conducted on both groups. During the study, it was understood that, students have misconceptions because of previous incorrect learning and their different and high-level expectations about biotechnology practices. At the end of the study, it was determined that activities based on constructivist approach eases conceptual understanding, ensures more permanent learning, and more effective in removing misconceptions when compared to present curriculum activities. On the other hand, it was seen that students have sufficient awareness in studies about biotechnology and genetic engineering, they partly follow international studies, but they have a nonassertive attitude about studies on biotechnology and genetic engineering in our country.

This paper aims to reveal how the attitudes of ex-slave black men in Ruby fictionalized by Toni Morrison in Paradise against their women and young people and then the women in the Convent near Ruby with ambition for power resemble to the witch hunts in the 15th century in Europe. The men developed a new kind of dominancy in their village founded to have a new, free and peaceful life turn this fake paradise into a hell for women because of patriarchal attitudes and behaviors. After a while, this paradise evolves into a paradise for only men and their full-blooded power. In consequence of the race of having control over women and young people and efforts to shape the future according to their own rules, some changes perceived as corruption and degeneracy by men come up. Living in the Convent, women who are offended, beaten or humiliated in one way or another are blamed to be witches and to have some supernatural forces because they live in peace together and in solidarity without any need to men. Some men who are pride of coming from full-blooded families tie some troublesome developments in these women. Relating their own sins, wrong attitudes and mistakes and bad progression in the village to the women’s free and independent lives, these men refuse blaming themselves and try to get rid of their responsibilities. This situation ends up with the men of eight full-blooded families launch a witch hunt against the women in the Convent.

Foreign language education is among the most problematic educational problems in our country. Today, English language teaching starts as a compulsory lesson at the second grade of the primary school and German and French are taught as electives or additional language at some private schools. Although 12 years of compulsory foreign language teaching courses that start at the second year of the primary school and continue until the first year of the higher education, the vast majority of students in our country cannot use foreign language (speaking) skills. Because foreign language teaching courses often consist of theoretical grammar rules (memorising). In addition, high school and university entrance exam questions are about grammar, reading and comprehension skills in our country. The lack of listening and speaking skills in these exams is another problem. In this context, the methods and techniques used to teach language courses may be considered among these problems. In traditional foreign language teaching the foreign texts are translated into the mother tongue, questions are answered and other exercises (true-false, fill in the blanks, matching, etc) are done. In this study, the teaching of English in general is explained in a different way. The aim of this study is to show that most of the English modals could be taught descriptively in the Turkish words and texts. To that end, the modals and their usage in Turkish and English are explained briefly. Secondly, the method and the logic on which the study based is described. Finally, some Turkish words and texts that could be used in teaching English are presented. As a result, it was seen that most of the modals could be expressed in Turkish words and texts. The English modals can be taught to the children in a short time and permanently by using the Turkish texts which include English modals in them.

A Different Perspective on Constructivism in Line with Views of Sati' al-Husri

The fundamental objective in our educational system in today's information age should involve ensuring students to gain the skills of having access to information, rather than just transferring the information to them. Having thus adopted the behaviorism approach earlier and arranged the educational environment accordingly, Turkey realized a radical transformation in elementary education programs in the academic year 2005 - 2006, and adhered to a teaching program which takes constructivist approach as basis. On the other hand, constructivism has a number of criticized aspects despite all of its positive qualities; it is actually seen in terms of educational practices in our country that there are differences between approaches theoretically adopted and those practically followed. Considering all positive and criticized aspects of the theory of constructivism and acting from the consideration that it would be more appropriate to adapt this theory to our society, value systems and educational system instead of adopting the theory in its existing form, this study aims at examining, in the context of constructivism, the book titled Fenn-i Terbiye, which is the most important work on pedagogy by Sati' al-Husri, a significant educationalist of Ottoman educational system, and which was a basic pedagogic source at teaching schools in the Second Constitutionalist Period. Major similarities can be seen between the views of Sati' al-Husri and bases of the constructivist theory. Except for all these similarities, certain views of Sati' al-Husri do not correspond to the constructivist theory but have different qualities. In line with the views analyzed, it is concluded that adaptation of the constructivist theory to our society by enriching the theory with particular aspects such as moral education, social interest as a matter of priority, physical education and love of truth will be beneficial as well as integration of all elements, which we regard as propelling factors for the future of our educational system, to educational environments instead of being strictly attached to teachings of a single theory.

Rapid developments in technology have spread and varied the tools used for communication. Today, people using these tools can communicate more easily with their acquaintances as well as with other people they do not know. The fact that the concept of place and environment in communication is no longer on the agenda has varied the language used within the society and increased the importance of language used in communication. The purpose of this study trying to examine communication skills regarded as an important building block in sharing information was to determine foreign language preservice teachers’ views about communication skills. The research sample included 369 foreign language preservice teachers attending an education faculty. The scale used in the study was made up of two parts. The first part aimed at gathering data regarding the participants’ gender, their departments and class grades. In the second part, the Communication Skills Evaluation Scale (CSES) consisting of 25 five-point Likert-type items was used. Analysis of the research data revealed that the male preservice teachers’ views about communication skills were slightly higher than those of the female preservice teachers. In terms of the participants’ department (German Language Teaching, English Language Teaching and French Language Teaching), a significant difference was found between their communication skills. In addition, no significant difference was found between the participants’ views about communication skills with respect to their class grades. Also, in relation to their class grades, the highest attitude mean score was, though with a slight difference, in favor of the freshman students participating in the study.
