It is possible to see wit of Nef'i, one of the most important poets of 17th century, in Turkish Divan poems. However it is not possible to see wit and literary strength of Nefi, which we are used to, in poems in Siham-ı Kaza which is famous for being humorous. In this work, Nefi used a language which can be qualified as rude, unprocessed and containing a lot of swear words. It is unquestionable that readers, who are used to high level of intelligence and wit of Nef'i shows in Divan, won't enjoy these poems. Researchers like Köprülü examined this situation, too. Almost all researchers studying on Siham-ı Kaza state the fact that poems in this work owe their humour and poetry to slang statements and words instead of wit. In this study, the reasons of difference/incompatibility of style between Turkish Divan and Siham-ı Kaza, which are known to belong to Nef'i, have been thought. In this context, these two mentioned works have been tried to be analyzed in terms of vocabulary and literary values.

Turkish history was dealed with an approach of “Civilization History” in a comparative way and related with Eropean and World History. The dynastic history teaching which was based on the important historical personalities was leaved end instead the modern and scientific historical method developed in west was adopted. According to this approach ancient civilizations, history of Islam, Turkish History before Ottoman Period and Ottoman History reflected via important developments and in a systematic style which is based on periods and themes. Moreover, “High School First Grade” history curriculums of the two periods were translated into new letters and these were given in the appendix.

Yenisei inscriptions are inscriptions along the Yenisei River having a total number of 250 and thought to have been erected by the Kyrgyz. Among these inscriptions, although the first discovered one was Uybat III (E 32) Inscription, not much had been known about the characteristics of the alphabet and who they belonged to until the inscriptions remained from the Second East Turkic Khanate was found in 1889 by N. Yadrintsev. After the decipherment of the letters in this alphabet by Thomsen, researches mostly focused on the Mongolian area, and attempts were also made to read these inscriptions. In this sense, we should mention the names Radloff, S. Ye. Malov and H. N. Orkun. None of the Yenisei inscriptions bear a date. Maybe they did not have advanced calendar systems to be used in the inscriptions. The common characteristic of almost every inscription is that they mention, rather than historical events, what the hero of the inscription did, why he died, and longing for family members, homeland, sky and sun as told from his mouth; as a result, they did not caught the attention of researches apart from scientists on Turkish language. In this article, 170 inscriptions, whose texts are available, have been analyzed in detail, and our attention has been devoted to the narrations in the texts which might be dated. It has been attempted to determine at least when a few of the inscriptions were erected.

The paper discusses the Turk languages, respectively the Altai languages from the important aspects as classification, transcription as well as distribution and history. The family relationships among the Ural-Altaic are also an important aspect. The classification, distribution and number of speaker of the Uralic is also anchored, intentional and irrespective of the existence of a relationship. Especially the classification of the ur- Altaic and its derivates are treated illustratively. Hereby, perspectives different experts are briefly outlined. These perspectives as well as the illustrations are based on the Turkology, respectively on the accepted sources in the field of Ural-Altaic. The paper comprises new constructive ideas as well as contrastive comparisons. The linguistic records of experts were treated preferential. Despite intented to analyse the development, distribution and classification of the Ural-Altaic language group in general, the Turk languages are favored due to their spread, high number of speaker and their varying transcription. Furthermore, the demographic significance of the Turk languages are not fully understood. Turkologists treat this subject justifiably subject-specific and mostly very complicated. Hence, the paper is expected to fill a gap through its different perspective.

After a month before they were given the same reading test (post –test) in the same classroom setting, they were shown mental pollutants - a compilation of various videos with violent, scary, erotic, and comedic content from popular video-sharing websites for 40 minutes. It was hypothesized that mental pollutants would contaminate students’ mind by distracting emotional states and slowing mental processes and thus impeding the comprehension of foreign language reading material. The statistical results based on T-test Paired Samples Statistics and One-Sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test show that exposure to mental pollutants remarkably results in poor L2 reading comprehension.

In this paper we do an etymological essay of the word sukıngu which used in Sekiz Yükmek. According to Juten Oda sukıngı is derivated from suk- or sok- “to thrust into” and it means “winter dwelling”. Marcel Erdal disagrees this opinion and claims that it is derivated from sogın- “cool themselves” and he transcribes this word as sogıngu means “refreshing room for the summer”. Şen claims that this word is derivated from sukın- which means “to take a bath” in Old Turkic and explains its meaning as “bathroom”. We share the same views with Şen about the meaning of sukıngu. But we claim that the root of this word is sug- “to drain (water etc.)” in Old Turkic. Then added this word -(X)n- reflexive suffix and it became sugın- “to bathe”. -gu+ in Turkic, makes place names and when this suffix added to the sugıngu it means “bathroom”.

Abstract Comparative literature is a discipline which bases on comparison between literary works and authors. A comparison is necessary in order to fasten down the influences of a work or author on another work or author. Although this discipline rather handles the works written in different languages, also examines the interaction among literary products of same language. Postmodernism raised the importance of comparative literature. Through intertextuality, which is used by postmodernism, the effects among works became more clear. Some parallelisms draw the attention between the novels of Umberto Eco’s Gülün Adı and Orhan Pamuk’s Benim Adım Kırmızı in context of comparative literature. The similarities between the two works are being put into words on various occasions but the nature of this resemblance is not being mentioned too much. The events passing through on closer centuries, having contents based on knowledge and art, the quarrel between reformers and conservatives, the methods of approaching to murders and solving them evoke between two novels. In this study, we tried to examine the probable effects of Gülün Adı on Benim Adım Kırmızı.

Many archaic elements that aren’t present in standard language are known to live in dialects. Archaism appears not only in suffix and word form which are visible parts of language but also appears in meaning and role. Therefore, many words used in standard Turkey Turkish can appear in Anatolian accents with meanings and roles of archaic. One of the words which keep this archaic role and meaning in Anatolian accents is “Keri (Geri)”. The word “keri” in Anatolian accents comes after nouns wiht dative case and participles as it is in Old Anatolian Turkish and has gained the role of inflectional preposition with the meaning of “-dan sonra”.
9 verbs that derived from the suffix of –il such as “ayrıl-, devril-…” and are being used by dropping the medium syllable vowel indicates both the feature of “reflexive framework verb” and “passive framework verb”. These verbs hold a “reflexive meaning” when they become the predicate of some sentences and in some sentences, they hold a “passive meaning”. In the Turkish dictionaries and the spelling dictionaries that are published by the related institutions, it is not included any form of these verbs that are not dropped the medium syllable vowel such as “-ayırıl”, “-deviril”. In these publications, there are some verbs whics are similar in the strucuture of sound, but are used by not dropping the medium syllable vowel such as “geçiril-, kemiril-, sömürül-…” do not have the form that are dropped medium vowel syllable. The numbers of these verbs that are not dropped the medium vowel syllable are 46. From the meanings of explanations in the dictionaries, it can be understood that all of them are the passive voice and they can only be used in that meaning. 9 verbs that are drop the medium syllable vowel we stated above, bring out some complications and inconsistency about in which usage it is “passive verb” and in which usage it is “reflexive verb”. This situation is based on the ability between the reader-listener and the constructor of the sentence. In order not to ocur this complications and inconsistency, like the other list of 46 verbs, the spelling dictionaries should be included these forms of 9 verbs which are not dropped the medium syllable vowel and the meanings in the dictionaries should be explained according to the “active voice verbs”. It should be protected the forms of the ones who are dropped the medium syllable vowel; however, the meanings should be explained as a “reflexive voice”.

Figurative language use in different figures of speech such as metaphor, metonymy and simile, in terms of cognitive linguistics, is considered like literal language to be a conceptual phenomenon, a process based on cognition and a way of understanding. Investigations of cultural conceptualization which approaches language in terms of category, schema and cultural models also enables the limits of those comprehensions - which contain relationships between language, culture and cognition - to be determined. This paper examines cultural depictions of birds in Kutadgu Bilig which are discussed in terms of elements of cultural conceptualization

When dealing with the question of whether one should evaluate sentences based on verbalnoun as part of a simple sentence or as a compound sentence linguists have taken different approaches. These differences arise from the question: do verbalnoun form a subordinate clause or not? As is known verbalnoun bear both characteristics that are specific to verbs and characteristics that are specific to nouns. Or in other words: while verbalnoun continue to have features specific to a verb within a sentence they complete a predicate from different angles such as noun, adjective and adverb and can take suffixes like possessive and conditional suffixes, which the noun can also take. Thus these specifics of verbalnoun have become the reason why linguists take different approaches concerning the structure of sentences based on verbals. While engaging with this topic I shall attempt to categorise the different results by examining these different views and evaluations.

In the work, there are critics on Şem’i approximately in five hundred places. Although these critics are complicated in some ways, these can be grouped into three main titles: The critics relating to the differences from the main copy, the critics on meaning and the critics on grammar, style and verse forms. In this article, brief information about both interpreters and their interpretations about Gulistan will be given. After this introduction, Sudi’s critics on Şem’i’s carelessness and mistakes to determine the sound texts and differences from the main copy will be classified and these critics and justifications will be explained in details. Consequently it will be tried to determine which annotator is more accurate in his justifications.

In this study which we tried to answer the question which feelings and the objectives drive the critic poet to criticize rather than what was criticized or why they were criticized. While we are trying to show the criticism in our Classical Ottoman Poetry as a part of the life, we are going to emphasize the personal reasons of the criticism. We need to know that the people whose being described as an “Intellectual” is not wrong cannot stay away from criticizing the defects. For this reason, everything could be the subject of the criticism. While beard, moustache or the hypocrisy of a person sometimes became the subject of criticism, sometimes an administrator’s deficiences and flaws became the subject of criticism. Sometimes, even the minor social degenerations which the masses of people could not realize when they were alive were expressed. That is why the criticism, as we think, was not a remote subject for the Classical Ottoman poets, on the contrary, the criticism was closely related to their lives.

Women writers contributed much later to Chagatai literature although this started at about the same time with Anatolian and Azerbaijani literature together with which it together constitutes the three major fields of classical Turkish literature. Most probably the reasons for it were the socio cultural and geopolitical conditions. Nevertheless, particularly in Turkmenistan and Harezm women poets like Zebunnisa, Üveysi, Nadire, Mahzune, Nazime, Muazzam Han emerged. These women poets received such an education as to enable them to write not only in Jagatai but also in Persian and Tajiki. The most famous of these poets were Üveysi and Nadire.

No text can be in existence solitarily in literary process, but it does emerge through interrelating with preexisting texts. Because texts can maintain their continuousness with the subsequent. Intertextuality explains dimensions of this interrelation by setting forth a text’s interrelatedness with the preexistent ones. It is seen that an author converts an existent text within the frame of originality in an intertextual relation which is densely put into practice in postmodern narratives. The story of Murathan Mungan –who is a postmodern writer– named ‘A Present-day Cinderella’ is a reinterpretation of ‘the Cinderella tale’. The author utilizes the tale as a subtext and composes his story by following traces of this tale. In this article, common points and differences of Murathan Mungan’s story and the Cinderella tale are goint to be determined in the context of intertextual relations.

Among the religious works, the ones about Prophet Mohamed are much more paid attention. His life, personality, hadiths, holy wars, and his miracles have inspired Turkish poets. The works on Prophet Mohamed’s dead are called as Vefât-ı Nebî. Vefât-ı Nebî is generally included as a separate section in the works on Prophet’s life, especially in mawlids or in religious works. The work studied in this paper is a Vefât-ı Nebî recorded on behalf of Molla Veli. It has the characteristics of Old Anatolian Turkish Language. Like most of poets of Turkish literature, Molla Veli was also influenced by mawlid of Suleiman Çhelebi. The vocabulary index and way of speech has the quality of guidance for the works on its time period. In Vefât-ı Nebî written in religious-epic narrative style, even though the author’s aim of enlightening is dominant, it is also seen that he succeeded literary aesthetics from time to time

Cahit Sıtkı puts the poetry writing into his life-center place while he excludes everything as an enemy that threat his freedom. Poet whose dreams and expectations are not concordant with reality falls down to depression time to time, so he is passive against the outside; inside, has an agitative soul. Depressive soul and timidity about life effects his perception of love as a shelter. Linked with this shelter position women are against an object of love seen as a tender sister or mother or a distant nice innocent figures. Poet who heals his soul with such high values, is seized of a lightened, vivid emotional flood when escapes from pessimism and feels the love. It is such an enthusiasm that even nature accompanies him with vitality. When Cahit Sıtkı meets with his wife (Mrs. Cavidan), his perception of love as a shelter calms down then lover, no longer, leaves from its mortal sides and becomes an “angel”. Cahit Sıtkı when his death that occurs at an unexpected time, gifts his “angel” lover to self conscious of humanity. While humanity reads his poems, they will find a strong support against the inescapable end.

In addition, the culture of cemetery is also one of the topics taken in the study. Particularly, the study which claims that usage of grave stones, taking an important place in Turkish culture, take form according to modern life, has drawn attention the modern structure which is visualized by standardizating the cemeteries.
One of the main principles in recognizing the people of a country and their community is to look into their culture. One of the popular culture activities that UNESCO wanted to protect within the scope of the “Preservance of the intangible cultural heritage” contract is the “Hand Crafts Tradition”. The social values and cultural structures are rapidly changing parallel with the technological advances. The traditional professions are now held by the last master craftsmen fighting against all difficulties and having trouble finding apprentices. Our aim is to be able to transfer our cultural wealth to the next generations. In our study we have focused on the almost extinct occupations like prosthetics, saddlery, matting and pottery.

After the depression of 1929, in 1930s, when the idea of statism started to lead the world, the magazine “Kadro”, published by some of the Marxist intellectuals except Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu, mostly supported the intellectuality of new political regime. Therefore, the movement “Kadro” gave voice to the perspective of standing for all kinds of governmental interventions, particularly economical interference and adopted the idea of an authoritarian government. In this article, the magazine “Kadro” will be examined in terms of the perspective of language and literature. The magazine “Kadro” started publishing before ‘Türk Dil Kurumu’, and after “TDK” was established, it became the assertor of the new government’s view of language and literature. It is known that there are 36 issues of the magazine and when all the issues are scrutinized, the simplification in the language can be detected. In this composition, we will try to shed light on the different points of the movement “Kadro”, which has great impacts on our literary world.

We encounter tradition as a concept with a wide definition frame from its meaning in daily life to religion, from economics to sociology which always protects its place in the focus of discussions everywhere and every time. The reason behind the existence of tradition is “continuousness” and the persistent maintenance of this continuousness against change. Turkish poets interested in tradition are observed to deal with tradition in sense and sentiment plan rather than style and to be in struggle for attaining an interpretation. One of these poets is Arif Ay. He believes that poem springs to life through tradition and a poem unrelated with tradition cannot live long. With this belief, he establishes a bond with past in his poems. The sources of the poems of Arif Ay demonstrate that Yunus Emre and Karacaoğlan are two basic figures feeding his poems. Both figures take place in his poems as sensibility. Having a rich image world, Arif Ay is known for his sensible attitude towards tradition. We reach a traditional poetic sensibility with his poems. He is one of the poets to successfully combine verse structural of folk poetry and the harmony of free verse.

From folk songs to lullabies, from public beliefs to birth and death traditions, from handicrafts to people’s meteorologies, Folklore searches all the values that direct the folk’s moral and material life as a big fan covering the people. By force of modern time, bad effects of communication instruments on our moral and material culture has been in progress. Although there are some last remains, cultural elements should be gathered together, protected, and searched scientifically. Folklore products survive today and will survive tomorrow as they survived in the past and they will never die out. Çan, the district of Çanakkale, is very rich and productive in Folklore products. Çan has an important place in folk cultural morals. In the Çan villages, which are the farthest settlements of Çan, even today we can see that Folklore works keep their dynamism and survive. Each of the folklore and folk culture elements that are saved today will build up cultural heritage of the future. In this study, transition periods applications of Çan region folklore products have been analyzed by evaluating the birth and death traditions in the region. Although Çan region is located in a place far away from folklore works, it has been confirmed that it shows similarities to the cultures of the people living in Caucasia and Central Asia. It also manifests that Turkish societies living in various parts of the world take their nourishments from the same source.
