The researches on Anatolian and Rumelian dialects which commenced in mid-19th century, has made a considerable progress both in quality and quantity correspondingly with the development of universities. The information about Anatolian and Rumelian dialects was limited during the first century of Turkish dialect studies. Most of these studies were based on the researches conducted by the foreign scholars. In addition to these foreign originated studies, we can count some grammar books containing information related to dialects. These grammar books are of importance since they indicate the agelong change process of dialects. This paper evaluates the information about Anatolian and Rumelian dialects which are found in the grammar books written before the first quarter of 20th century.

The Oghuz constitute an important group of the Turkic peoples. Today, they live in various concentrations of the population in an area stretching from the Oxus (“Amu Darya”) to the Balkan-Peninsula. Their population is approximately 120 million. Throughout history, the Oghuz Turkic was the everyday language of all of the Oghuz peoples. However, the same is not true about their literary language (“high-level language”). This article basically studies the process of Oghuz Turkic developing into a literary language. Due to the political, economic, social and cultural circumstances of their time and in connection with the administrative systems of the states under which they ruled. In Anatolia and in Northern-Azerbaijan, the Oghuz were able to develop their literary language. Efforts are being made in Turkmenistan with regards to this issue and it is not an issue in the remaining parts of the Oghuz regions.

The Situation Of Remaining Devoicing Or Sonarisation Of The Devoicing-Explosive Consonants In The Last Sound In ‘Miftahu’l Ferec’

The words in our language end with the consonants of ‘p, ç, t, k’ except a few ones such as ‘ad’, ‘sac’. This rule is prevalent for the words with foreign origin as well. However, when such words take vowel or suffix that begins with a vowel, the consonants which are talked about are sonarisated. This sound incident which we accept as the basic characterisric of Turkish does not always depend on a rule. While sonarisation occurs many times in similar situations, it is not seen in some words. In ‘Miftahu’l-Ferec’, the tendency of sonarisating of the devoicing-explosive consonants in the last sounds is in higher level when compared to the standard Turkish of Turkey. Today, the single syllabled words that end with the consonants of ‘p, ç, t, k,’ take place in our text with their sonarisated forms owing to the basic long vowels. The devoicing-explosive in the last sounds of the multi-syllabled words are sonarisated unexceptionally when used with an suffix or a preposition that beginning with a vowel. Furthermore, sonarisation is seen in the text as a result of the incident of connection.

Written in Karahan Turkish by Kâşgarlı Mahmut, the founder of the Turkology, Dîvânu Lûgati’t-Türk is one of the main guideline works on Turkish language in many directions. This work has an illuminating significance not only for Karahan Turkish period but also for preceeding and following periods as Kâşgarlı Mahmut enriched his work, which is primarily a dictionary, with some grammatical elements besides vocabulary. Verbs play a special role among these grammatical elements. Thus, Besim Atalay, who translated the work from Arabic into Turkish, also states that the parts showing the structures of Turkish verbs in the work are of vital importance. In this paper, the Dîvânu Lûgati’t-Türk verbs showing “approximation” have been studied. However, the verbs showing “approximation” in the Dîvân have not only been studied in terms of compound-structured descriptive verbs but also a list of the verbs showing “approximation” in root and stem forms has been made and evaluated with respect to “manner of action” and “aspect”, which are still new terms for the Turkish grammarians. Consequently, by studying the elements presented in the Dîvânu Lugati’t-Türk, a new window with a new angle will be opened to the Turkish language of both the Karahan period and the preceeding and following periods.

A relationship established by and between antonymous words is defined as antonymy. Such relationships are founded on the same logic; however, the building blocks and links between them are different. The present study on Turkey Turkish proverbs and idioms aims to handle antonymous relations under five headings, namely structural, substitutional, reversive, converse (relational), and complementary. The headings were identified as: Structural antonymy, under which nouns and verbs are treated based on their affirmative and negative senses. Substitutional antonymy refers to replacement of a component in a sentence. Reversives means a relationship established between a verb/noun and its reverse counterpart. Converse antonymy is built upon the position of similar and different elements. Complementary antonymy rests on the elimination of deficiencies. Accordingly, Turkey Turkish proverbs and idioms have been examined and detailed under the corresponding headings. It can be concluded that antonymy fulfils such functions as organizing comparative narration at sentence level, structures of change, generalisation, and imperatives, agreement and links between constituents; as well as determining and ordering negated meaning, direction, communication, description, and preference.

The author states that a certain amount of energy and time is spent for every activity in the nature, and therefore he points out that all living species tend to save up energy and time as much as they can. In the article, it is underlined that “least-effort principle” can be seen in every change in language and in this context; changes in phonemes and morphemes in Tatar Turkish were explained in the framework of “least-effort principle”, and the changes were specified diachronically by giving examples both from historical texts and today’s Tatar Turkish.

The Yenisei Inscriptions, the number of which is over 200, have not received enough attention from researchers except for those studying on the Turkish language due to the fact that they have limited amount of lines and were written irregularly. One of the most important reasons of this is that all of the inscriptions are dateless and that they contain some cliché phrases and sentences which are similar to aphorisms of today’s epitaphs. However, still it is possible to elicit some information from multi–lined inscriptions such as de Elegest I (E 10), Açura (E 26), Altın–Köl I (E 28), Altın–Köl II (E 29), Köjeelig–Hovu (E 45), Abakan (E 48). In this article, data on Turkic tribes have been compiled from some 160 inscriptions, whose texts are on hand, and we have aimed to supply new information on what is already known about these tribes. After presenting texts where identified tribes are mentioned, they will be translated into the modern Turkish, and then each tribe will be evaluated in regard to the Yenisei inscriptions and to the Yenisei catchment basin.

This study examines the previous and current versions of primary Turkish teacher education curriculum. Firstly, various features of the curriculum content are evaluated. Secondly, both versions of the curriculum are compared and contrasted according to the presented subject-specific courses and pedagogical subject-specific courses to see the similarities and differences between them. It is found out that the new version of the curriculum includes a limited number of subject specific courses. This situation can be criticised as a defficiency. As a result, this paper points out that a person who has not got the necessary knowledge and expertise of Turkish language cannot provide any contribution to teaching of Turkish.

While new morphological elements are formed in Turkish, they first undergo a process of being auxiliary words and then they become affixes. In the structures of öğüt and üvey which are dealt with, the structures following the noun ög must be the ones formed through this process. The words öksüz, öğüt and üvey are not derived from the different word roots based on the same phonemes and they are not step-sisters sprang or resemble each other through the phonem changes in other word roots in historical periods. The words öksüz, öğüt and üvey which seem to be derived based on different roots are formed through the words and affixes added to the word ög. They are ‘true’ sister words born of the same mother sharing the common root transformed into different forms at the result of the mixtures and the phoneme changes in the root.

Those categories are the general principles of the work of art that is the fold of being. The aesthetic value analyses that would be done without considering those categories would be arbitrary analyses. Among the categories that form the general principles of a work of art, we can mention beauty, sublimity, tragic, comic, naïve, childish etc. In this study, we think to handle the aesthetic and tragic value relationship in the context of the work of art by analyzing a poem of Cahit Sıtkı in the light of the tragic category.

The nature and form of verb-complement connection is determined by the meaning of the verb as well as by the speakers of the language.
Pontos issue is a problem part of which - to establish an independent state- remained in the past and part of which –some historical, political, and cultural concerns- has come to-date. The reason why the problem has remained unsolved up to now is largely due to some allegations made by the Greek parliament and some other circles which have no sound historical background. Today the fact that international public opinnion still handles the problem free from any scientific perspective makes it more and more unsolvable

Zeynep Korkmaz shares the same opinion with Lübimov and says that “the features of transivity and intransivity of the verb stems are related to the lexical meanings of these verbs.” Hence the transivity and intransivity which comes up with the voice suffixes is in the case of grammatical category. The issue of this article is to emphasize some verbs both transitive and intransitive in the Turkic Runic inscriptions.

ABSTRACT Throughout history, the Kyrgyz people borrowed many words and concepts especially on religion and ethics as a result of their relations with the Arabs and the Arabic language. They also borrowed many words of Persian origin on commerce, husbandry and agriculture from the Uzbek and Tajik peoples due to their relations with them in those fields. As a result of their close relations with the Russians which started in the tsar period, they not only made Russian as their official language and first language in their daily life due to the high pressure, but also borrowed many political, administrative, scientific and philosophical concepts from Russian, without phonetically changing many of them. Still geographically close to the Mongol and Chinese peoples, the Kyrgyz people got close to them, and even fought them in history. And as a result of such relations, they borrowed some words related to nomadic societies.

Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar, often benefits from the fantastic and the supernatural elements in his novels. He believes in materialist world view and through his novels he advocates it and attempts to impose and spread his views to the public. In his novels, there are many supernatural elements such as the jinn, fairy, devil, resurgent skeletons, returned souls etc. and the situations caused by these supernatural elements. By using these, his aim is always to prove that in the reality there are no such supernatural things and unknowable forces. In his point of view, these supernatural and fantastic forces, situations and atmosphere, because of their attractiveness, help him to enlighten “uneducated” people. The end of his novels is always in a “realistic” way and the materialist worldview prevails to the spiritualism. The reason, logic and science become superior to other things seem to be supernatural and they eliminate the fantastic. However, among the other novels of him which are about similar subjects, one of them, Ölüler Yaşıyor mu? can be located as different because it points out the uniqueness in terms of the intellectual and the literary aspect of Hüseyin Rahmi. Thus, the aim of this article is to present a detailed and comparative analysis of Ölüler Yaşıyor mu? which can be evaluated as “fantastic genre”, not the realistic and in which the author tries to show empathy with the spiritual world view.

Regardless of their levels, when students’ written texts are analyzed, it is found that erroneous sentences mostly focus on punctuation and spelling rules. Due to the fact that these errors cannaot be corrected, problems related to insufficient use of mother tongue are encountered.
The term Chronotope, which we may interpret as time -space, was put forward by Michael Bakhtin. Chronotope, which in the novel expresses the idea that every time seizes space, offers an important opportunity to understand Turkish novel. Being among the authors lived in the period between the collapse of the Ottoman and the emergence of the Republic, Halide Nusret Zorlutuna’s novels include the period they witnessed. Hence, the space or location in her novels implies psychological, cosmic, and biographic time. A chronotopic study of her novels would not only facilitate comprehension of complex pattern of events in her novels, but also provide a chance to read historical traces, the biography of the author, psychological and cosmic time through space or location.

Grammar as an area of linguistics intends to find and study the rules that form the language system. For someone to know his mother tongue requires a familiarity with the system of rules forming that language. Grammar is an integral part of instruction in developing the language skills e.g. reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Teaching grammar includes the provision of linguistic knowledge and comprehension and expression skills in Turkish, as well as the instructional activities supporting, explaining, and organizing these language areas. Therefore, teaching grammar cannot be considered as isolated from other language skills. Thus, the main purpose of grammar teaching is to use mother tongue well. It is observed that this point is not considered well in teaching grammar in Turkey. It is necessary to use a method in which grammar can be taught more functionally based on contextual texts or at least sentences in order to improve the other language skills. In order to avoid memorization in grammar teaching, an inductive method in which students discover the rule intuitively through examples rather than a method in which students learn the rule first and examples next.

The Issue of Turkish During the Initial Years of Modern Azerbaijani Literature

Efforts and endeavours towards using Turkish as the language of literature in Azerbaijan were arduous and painful as in Turkey. Populist approaches starting with Molla Penah Vagıf in the 17th c. and particularly the efforts of Ahundov, Zerdabi and Şirvani in the second half of the 19th c. afforded a more organised and systematic quality for Azeri literature, which was under the Arabian and Persian influence for many years. However it was not until the beginning of the 20th c. that we see an emphasis on the concept of mother tongue in Azerbaijan more extensively than before. Apparently the role and contribution of “Maarifçiler”, who were quick to work hard by taking advantage of the liberal atmosphere induced by the 1905 Manifest, was important. The period witnesses a debate between “public language” supported by Molla Nasreddin group and “Istanbul Türkçesi” supported by writers of Füyüzat as to what the language of literature should be. Such discussions and works contributed to the elimination of foreign elements in Azerbaijani Turkish.

The Alevi belief system is one of the important richnesses within Turkish language and culture. Spread over a far and wide geography, the community has also shaped many rituals and belief practices with its own dynamics. Thus, a world of numerous ritualistic terms is brought in Turkish language and culture. Due to the secrecy of the belief system, it has not been possible to ascertain the majority of the ritualistic terms by means of visual methods. In recent years, the overgeneralisation of the terms which have been ascertained seems to be a common mistake as well. However, a term sometimes has manifold meanings even in the same village. For this reason, false meanings might be attributed to a ritualistic term mentioned in a writing or poem. In this article the ritual of muhasip cemi, which is accepted as the secret prayer of the Alevi belief system, will be explained with materials collected from nine cities. The study will also be supported by visual elements that will be presented in an order similar to that of a ritual. Different terminological names attributed to the same belief practice will be given within the explanations as well.

The matter of literary language was brought to agenda from time to time not only during the Soviet period (1917-1991) but also pre-and-post-Soviet periods of Russian Turcology, and regarding this matter, important opinions were put forward, classifications were made, and studies were made on the history of Turkish literary languages and their current status. Especially, those made on separation and unification processes of literary languages by W. Radlof, S. E. Malov, A. N. Samoyloviç N. A. Baskakov, A. N. Kononov, E. R. Tenişev, İ. V. Stebleva, and G. F. Blagova stand out. In this respect, we find E. R. Tenisev’s studies more successful and objective from theoretical and experimental points of view. In the last twenty years, articles and books written on this matter have been drawing attention. The article of E. R. Tenisev’s entitled “??????? ???????? ?????????? ???????????? ?????? ?????????????? ????” (History of Turkish Written Literary Languages until Becoming a Nation) is a new and theory-based approach for the theory of the Turkish literary language history.

The Upper Karabakh issue has been one of the most important issues affecting stability in Caucasia after the fall of Soviets. In Karabakh which is a historical Turkish native country, Armenians were placed as from the Russia of Tsarizm and a region where the Armenians have a high population was created within the Azerbaijan lands. This field which is a mountainous region located in the upper parts of Karabakh is called Upper Karabakh or Nagorno- Karabakh. Due to the activities of Armenians settling in the region, conflicts started to happen as of the 19th Century and when came to 20th Century, these conflicts confronted us as a serious issue. Turkey, which is among the countries first recognizing the independencies of Azerbaijan and Armenia, has given importance to the Upper Karabakh issue in its relations with these countries.

The word “İleri” is one of these words ; it has a semantic restriction in Turkish used in Turkey ,yet it is used with an archaic meaning in Eastern Thrace accents apart from its use as an adverb of place. This word and its derivatives are only considered under the title of adverb of place in grammar books of recent Turkish in Turkey while they are used in the meanings of “önce, önceden, önceki, öncekiler etc.” in ex-Anatolian area. However, the word “ileri” has preserved this archaic meaning (önce, önceden, öncekiler vb.) and it has been used in the conceptual field of “öncelik bildirme” on its own or with other affixes.
In this present study, we dealt with relative clause typologies in the world languages in general and Turkic Type Relative Clause typology in particular. By doing this, we compared Turkish relative clause construction with Japanese, Korean and Hungarian ones, which are all considered in Uralic and Altaic Language Family. In doing this, we made use of Chomskian theories called Generative-Transformational Grammar and Governement and Binding Thoery. As is known, Chomsky declared that all languages have the same typolgy in the Deep Structure. The changes among languages are witnessed in Surface Structure. There is a transformation between deep structure and surface structure. It means that, a noun pharse can be moved to another place leaving an empty place behind by constructing a chain between the empty place and its antecedents (moved element). When we compared Turkic type relative clause typology with Japanese, Korean and Hungarian, we amasingly saw that the strategies are the same in these langauges.

As in America and Japan, “The child with a long name” is one of the folk tales told in Turkey. The first aim of this paper is to define the historical and geographical journey of this tale in Turkey. In order to achieve this aim, the source of the tale, the channels by which it was distributed and told are identified. The local elements and other items peculiar to the Turkish version of the tale are determined. Furthermore, the Turkish version of the tale is compared to the American and Japan versions. Second aim of the paper is to define the use of the name in the tale and situate the humorous use of this name in the Turkish humor folklore. In order to do so, the use of the name in the tale has been compared to the cluster -which I have developed myself- to analyze use of names in Turkish narration and humor. At the end of the article, it is explained how the tale- which was first introduced as an American cartoon- got to be known in Turkey and how it became a part of the oral folklore in 20 years. Besides it is explained that the use of name in the tale is similar to the use of names in wordplays and different from the use of names in tales or jokes.

Compound verbs in Turkish are generally studied in four ways: These are those consisting of a name and an auxiliary verb, those which have a meaning of an idiom, those in which two verbs maintain their meanings, and descriptive verbs. The most frequently and widely used one among the descriptive words which are named in this way since they describe occurence and action is the verb “bil-”. From Old Turkish onwards, in every period and in various dialects, this verb appeared in similar and/or different forms was sometimes used in its basic meanings and has sometimes different meanings and functions which change according to context. Ability, competence, probability, request, permission, recommend, prohibition, preparation for adversity, disbelief, surprise and compliment are some of its functions in Mo-dern Turkish. As for the functions of inability, probability of inability and probability of undoing considered under the title of “the negative form of ability” are the topics which are worth studying separately because of their typical structures and subtleties of meaning. In the writing given below, the historical development of the descriptive verb “bil-” was generally discussed and its usages in Modern Turkish were explained with examples.”

These authors except Konevî lived nearly in the same period. Şem’î and Sûdî met each other. Konevî lived two centuries later than above authors. The annotations of Sürûrî, Şem’î and Konevî drew attention especially in terms sufic interpretation. In this article some introductory information about Konevi’s annotation which was criticised because of its extreme sufic interpretation will be given. With the development and spreading of Persian language and literature during this period strong writers and poets emerged outside of Iran and especially in Iraq and Azerbaijan. The Seljuk sultans showed an interest in Persian poetry and protected and encouraged the poets and writers writing in this language. With the same effort coming from the Seljuk leaders and commanders, Persian poetry reached its pinnacle. Turkish rulers carried out the same leadership that they displayed in every civil advancement and helped in the development of Persian culture by fulfilling their responsibilities towards Persian people.

In the period of oral tradition, in which words were recorded in our minds and words were again passed down on the following generations orally, the difficulty in keeping long sentences in mind and conveying those sentences to others required a precise, clear and poetic style. For this reason, most of our proverbs consist of one or two sentences. The number of those which are long is small. One of the factors that allow proverbs passed down on the following generations and which are the products of oral culture to be catchy is the reiterations. A world of meaning that is formed with the help of reguler reiteration of thought assumes a revitalizing function on the mind of the listener. Idiomatic expressions, reiterations formed this way helps the permanency of the words. Reiterations made in regular and irregular intervals add harmony to the expression, whether in a written or an oral text. In this study, the reiterations observed in our proverbs will be mentioned and types of reiterations will be dealt with.

In this study it has been aimed to evaluate geographically the areal change occurring in the wetlands of Lake Gölbaşı. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) methods and techniques have been utilized in this study. Also the study has been supported with land works. It has been understood that there has been a reduction in the lake area at a rate of 0,60 km2 and 61,52 % in the 50 year period between 1957 and 2007. The main causes of this change are the factors of agricultural activities in the lake surroundings, excessive exploitation of the sources that feed the lake, drought and evaporation, percolations in the lake base, making the exotic flora and fauna widespread, unconscious land and sea hunting and opening so many boreholes in the basaltic areas north of the lake. This overall situation necessitates a sustainable management plan. Otherwise, problems of no return may happen in the future.

Arabic and Persian were used in Azerbaijani gravestones by the end of the 19th century. Poems and literary expressions were usually written in Persian and religious expressions like verses, the Messenger's words and prayers in Arabic. From the second half of the 19th century some Turkish texts, mostly poetic, start to appear in some graves. One may conclude, in a sense, that Turkish started to replace Persian in those days. However, religious expressions and information about identity of dead persons were still in Arabic. Use of Turkish in Azerbaijani gravestones in the pre-Soviet period intensifies in some regions. In this context, the oldest samples belonging to the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century were found in Genje, Kazah, Tovuz, Sheki, Mereze, Shamahy and Baku. In all of them, Turkish texts were written in Arabic alphabet. With the change of alphabet to Cyrillic, once Turkic texts in Cyrillic started to be popular. These are mostly literary texts in poetic form, and religious expressions were written in Arabic with Arabic letters. This essay contains an evaluation of Turkish texts found in old Azerbaijani gravestones.

One of the critiques directed to Servet-i Fünûn Literature, which appeared after the Tanzimat period when Westernization efforts started, is that this movement is non-national. Westernization efforts weigh heavily on the period Servet-i Fünûn Literature came into existance in political, social, and cultural fields; therefore, those who have worked on that period assess Servet-i Fünûn Literature with the attribute non-national, on accounr of its reflecting western lifestyle. However, when cultural charge is the question, a literature’s reflecting the society that it emerges from does not necessarily indicate that it is non-national. Consequently, whether Servet-i Fünûn Literature is non-national constitues the subject matter of this article.

Siberian history is very important for Turkish history and culture as being one of the main lands, although it is not studied until 16th century from the first hand references. As a matter of fact that archaeological excavation made by Russian during the period of SSCB, shows that the historical culture of that place are similar with the Turkish culture. Also one of the important issues is that, the huge evaluations about Siberian are carried out by the Russians. However in the Russian assessments it is seen that Turkish culture is later coming culture and the local elements are very different. When they gave wide information about tribes that were thousands, they did not give more information about Turkish tribes that has general Turkish culture as Şor, Teleüt, Hakas, Yakut and Tuva. They aimed to show the differences between the local and later coming culture. The history of this area where is along with the world and history, get western countries attention as well as Russian. Siberian History written by J. Forsyth is one of the important studies in this area. The studies about Siberian in our country are very poor. The studies made by Radloff and Katanov are very important and these studies are shown as important references in all world. Especially, it is need to know the first term of the Siberian history for investigating Siberian and understanding the Russian invasion which started in 16th century. Also with this aspect this study is important.

To learn a language doesn’t mean to learn the words of that language and tell them in sequential order. Without learning the meanings, structures and types of the words, they cannot be used properly and in a meaningful way in a sentence. Therefore, grammar teaching becomes vital in that condition. It is possible to claim the same understanding for Turkish language teaching. A person who wants to learn Turkish cannot use it properly and effectively without learning its grammar structures. A person, who knows the grammar of the language can understand better the spoken person, can explain better what he wants from him, can understand better what he reads and also while writing he can enunciate himself clearly and better. So grammar teaching is an indispensable resource for teaching a language. İn this study, levels of second primary education students towards understanding the grammar subjects was searched and a scale was applied to teachers who studied in primary schools, therefore. As a result of the study, it has been found that Turkish teachers have negative opinion about teaching of grammatical rules, there is no significant difference between opinions about teaching of grammatical rules according to the seniority of teachers, genders, departments that teachers graduated and the school that they work.
