The Language Of Divan Poetry Is The Language Of The Empire

The language of Divan literature has always been introduced as a synthesis of three languages: Arabic, Persian and Turkish. Indeed, Ottoman Turkish that is the combination of these three is the essential of Divan literature. However, Divan poets also used words from Greek, Armenian, Italian, and some languages of Balkans and Caucasus besides Arabic and Persian words. Especially poets who were Rumelian or worked as the state officers for years were finding different ways of usage in their works with the expressions they borrowed from the Balkan languages. In ten verses of a poem of Mustafa Âlî of Gallipoli who was a bureaucrat, an intellectual and at the same time a poet and who had served as a statesman for a long time in the Balkans in the 16th century, there are expressions of Arabic, Persian, Albanian, Franc, Serbian, Greek, Manav, Bosnian and Chagatai people in their own languages and dialects. Based on this example, it would not be wrong to say that Divan poetry is a part of “a literature of an empire” and that the language is “an imperial language”. In conclusion, the language of Divan literature is an entire entity that has basically Ottoman Turkish as a dominant factor but also comprises many elements from the languages of the nations all around the Ottoman Empire.

Re-Thinking The Turkî-ı Basît Movement in Turkish Literature

The term Türkî-i Basît was coined initially by Fuad Köprülü, who explored the subject, in an article published in 1921, before going on to explain the movement's origins and development in a subsequent book that was published in 1928. There he gave examples from a collection of poems written by Nazmî of Edirne entitled Türkî-i Basît, and claimed that the literary movement Türkî-i Basît Cereyanı stemmed from Nazmî's poems and from those of Mahremî of Tatavla. Moreover, he believed that Mahremî and Nazmî opposed the increasing use of Arabic and Persian loanwords in Ottoman poetry in the 1500s, and that their reaction was to write in plain Turkish (but in ‘Arûz' meter). Following Köprülü's publications upon this time, Türkî-i Basît became the prime reference for scholarly research almost every scholar agree largely that Türkî-i Basît was the starting point of a linear process that was set to last for hundreds of years, a view that elevates it above a simple linguistic and literary movement that reflects the conditions of the time. Contrary to this view, however, Köprülü’s approach is weakened by his selective perception, in that he includes or excludes certain poets and their poems, and locates them within the linear linguistic-developmental process. This article explores this topic's historical background, then discusses Köprülü’s views and his influence on Ottoman literary historiography, before calling into question the very existence of the Türkî-i Basît movement.

Discussion about the language and style of classic (Divan) poem has always been one of the major discussion in literature. While the poets of XIV and XV centuries have kept significant distance with the meaning by focusing on the local matters, their successors have profoundly focused on the poems that attempt to explore the meaning further. However, the latter poems have been criticized for gradual engagement in exhibition of their ingenuities. On the contrary to the establishing era, in Gibb’s expression, “the İranization was more prominent”at XVI, XVII, and XVIII centuries. Although there were some efforts against this resignation in terms of localization during the following centuries, these have not been successful so far. Because, the indigenous attitudes of poets in exspressing their poems in Turkish at early stage have nearly been replaced by the artificial efforts right after the localization. This indigenous style initiated by Yunus and Sultan Veled at earlier era has been followed by Asik Pasa, Gulsehrî, Ahmedî and Kadı Burhaneddin. Right at the beginning of the XV century, Ahmed-i Daî has taken over the mission and turned it over to Necati. This article deals with Ahmed-i Dai’s efforts.

Generaly it is used different expression like current, movement, trend, manner, style or form for localization which is defined that local geography, social life and true to life reflect to poem, simplification of language and trending use local form of poetry. It hasn’t gain certainty if it could qualify as a current. İn this work, we examine if localization could being defined as a current. But we come to a decision about such a sentimental matter which many researchers look uncertainly and we it to readers decision. İn the second part of work Baki’s Divan, one of the classicial school poetry’s achievements which localization shows itself in most beatiful and most outstanding is examined and given place to local factors which is made firm. Thus it is worked to be proved that classical school poetry is poems wasn’t far from society which they had lived and classical school poetry isn’t a literature which is based on dreams of elite on the contrary to pretensions.

While he was writing his work,he expanded the concepts in the original work in a more detailed way and added many instruments from Turkish culture and tradition. After analysing them, certain conclusion were put forward: In the first chapter, by determining the religious and theosophistical respects, we gave information about them. In the second chapter, the moral points in the work of art were determined and the respetcs that a person of then should have or should not have were found out. In the third chapter, on the other hand, the tradations, beliefs and rumors which can not be encountend in such works were determined. In the conclusion part, a general evalution was made and the comment of it was made in terms of today’s education and moral respects. Nazmi proposes for every advice in the work to be read carefully and for them to transfer these advices into actions. The “human model” that he proposes should take respects of science, morality, reality, knowledge and mind.

Türkî-i Basit (meaning Simple Turkish; later it becomes a designation for “Simplification of Turkish” movement) is a term that Edirneli Nazmî (Nazmî of Edirne), a 16th century poet, used in the titles of his poems in his Divan. This denomination is only seen in this poet’s Divan. Köprülü-zade Mehmed Fuad revealed this fact after he found Nazmî’s Divan in 1928. Fuat Köprülü claims that Türkî-i Basit is a movement, a tendency and a way of art. He regards Tatavlalı Mahremî (Mahremî of Tatavla) and Edirneli Nazmî as the first precursors of national literature movement. In this article after discussing the debates about acceptation or rejection of this issue, it is claimed that Türkî-i Basit is not a movement but a reflection of Mahallîleşme (Localization). This argument is proved in the light of recent researches.

Turkî-i Basît is a poetry comprehension based upon non-subordinates formed with Turkish words, which was initiated by Tatavlalı Mahremî and Edirneli Nazmî in the 16th century, upon increasing the use of Arabic and particularly Persian words in Divan Literature. This thought was first put forward by Fuat Köprülü. Those who adopted this thought of Köprülü regarded Turkî-i Basît as the movement of Turkish Conservatizm, nationalist and reaction to usage of Arabic and Persian words. In the recent studies related to the subject, ıt is suggested that Turkî-i Basît is not a literary movement but a branch of localization with just a movement characteristic. In this study, the process related to Turkî-i Basît was handled from the start, the research carried out on this subject was examined, and it was concluded that the efforts of the representatives of Turkî-i Basît were i

One of these poets, Şeyhülislam Yahya, although he has an identity of Muslim preacher, employed the delight and entertainment of life with elegant Turkish of Istanbul. Above all in his ghazals, he is highly successful in expressing the coloured stage chosen in daily life by using elegant Turkish, idioms proverbs, and folk sayings. Understanding of this art is effective in his being one of the most important represantative of naturalization at XVII. century.
