First Novel In Kazak Literature –Bakitsiz Jamal-

Bakıtsız Jamal, which was published in 1910 as a novel by Mirjakıp Duvlatulı, has a big importance in the history of Kazak literature while it has been the first work used that name till that time. In the work, oral expression- especially the meddah stories- was so dominant, the author did not focus on the details so much and did not give very much space for long descriptions. Bakıtsız Jamal can be considered as a short novel comparing to the novel type and reflect the properties of transition from poetry to prose and from folk story to story. In fact, Ali and Cemile’s love told in Bakıtsız Jamal has no difference from other publicly known love stories such as Leyla and Mecnun, Ferhat and Şirin or Kerem and Aslı. Although there exists such a similarity with folk stories, Bakıtsız Jamal can be considered as a step forward for a new era while this work had an important difference inside. Injustice toward women in society was put forward to be discussed in the novel which is very important in order to reflect the society began to change and opened to West. As a result, in spite of the deficiencies, Mirjakıp Duvlatulı’s Bakıtsız Jamal has an important function as a new stage in transition to novel, which is a new type in Kazak literature.

In 1860s, a new education system was under discussion in Russia. This education system aimed to educate the Turkish societies within the borders of Russia, it would be in effect until the end of 20th century, and its effects would be maintained after that time. This system having many objectives such as changing the alphabet, developing new educational curriculums, opening new schools, publishing new course books started with the activities of missionaries and with the support of some members of the societies, these objectives were tried to be fulfilled. This new education system resulting in opening of new schools, particularly opening schools for Kazak children for the first time, weakening the influence of Tatar mullahs on Kazak society, and adaptation of modern living style had, on the other hand, some negative impacts such as spread of Christianity and Christian culture, imposition of Christian values on people and making people feel more affiliated to Russian values and all these undermined the national values of these people. A famous missionary and Turcologist, İlminsky directed Kazak people towards these objectives. In order to avoid reactions from Kazak people, İlminsky planned to conduct his activities through revered and respected people of the society and selected Altınsarin for this purpose. As a result, Altınsarin approved this new education system and put forth efforts to get it disseminated among his people; yet, he always objected to İlminsky when it comes to missionary activities and did some innovative works to protect the national culture.

This article examines the development of xenophobia in the Netherlands and describes the social profile of the xenophobian people in recent years. The Netherlands, known as a country of tolerance for immigrants, started reacting against increasing number of immigrants since the 1960’s. As a result, the issue of immigrants has currently become one of the most important and controversial political problems in the country. An analysis of data collected from the Research of Cultural Changes in the Netherlands shows that the issue of negative attitudes against immigrants is not a marginal phenomenon and that, on the contrary, it reflects discontent of large social segments in the country. Xenophobia arises from a social competition between native and foreign social groups coming from different social, economic and cultural backgrounds. The article concludes that the Netherlands has to manage this social and cultural competition with reasonable integration policies if she wishes to get her image of “land of tolerance” back to her hands again.

Gagauzian Literature is the youngest among contemporary Turkish Literatures. Gagauz community has not published much more works in their mother tongue because of having an alphabet for just fifty-one year, the lack of the number of intellectuals, and other limitations and facilities. In 1957, after accepting a version of Cyrillic alphabet, they started to publish literary works. Before this, Gagauz poets were not able to publish their works. In Gagaudian literature writing in verse depicts priority to prose writing. In this study, after introducing the Gagauzian poetry, we will examine the role of Dionis Tanasoğlu in improving the Gagauzian language, literature, folklore as well as the poet’s literary characteristics, and his works.

Nizami Gencevi, whose real name was İlyas was born in Gence, Azerbaijan in 1141, he also died in this city in 1209. As a result of his strong interest in science, art and his knowledge of many languages, he dealt with different scientific fields, (philosophy, literature, astronomy, medicine, geometry, …) world civilization, basically Greek, Arabic, Persian and also the history of Caucasian public at the same time. Starting from the works of Nizami Gencevi, first of all, I tried to unify the head of state model with justice in my education based report. Nizami Gencevi points out that the main principle in a society that is awake is the social harmony and justice. Secondly, I tried to explain justice, by examples and concerning the current aspects again starting from the works of Nizami. Government is in power not to leave the community that it represents to the ferocity of the enemy groups, fighting each other. Its most important mission – the reason of its existance – is to maintain public security and to spread justice. Thirdly, Nizami, the artist, as if modelling the state by examples, wrote a great refined poem ‘Heft-Peyker’ in order to suggest that the state is an institution in power to bring justice. The philosopher and poet Nizami Gencevi expresses justice with these lines shortly, and to the point.

Mutual word borrowing between Turkish and neighbor nations indicate information exchange between Turks and its neighbors. Each information gained from a neighbor transferred commonly with the word in the source language. The Turks who lived next to the different nations like Chinese, Persians, Arabs, Hungarians, Slavic nations and so forth, gained many things from their neighbors and gave them many things. In addition to the mutual exchange, another factor which influenced borrowing Turkish vocabulary was the political dominance of Turks on these nations throughout the centuries. According to the E. N. Şipova’s work Slovar tyurkizmov v russkom yazıke (Dictionary of Turkish elements in the Russian Language) which published 1976 in Alma-Ata, Russian language contains more than 1500 turkish items. These words transferred from Turkish or its dialects to Russian directly or indirectly at different time points in the history. In this work we attmept to sort the Turkish words included in the Şipova’s mentioned work.

The Concept Of Awakening And Kazakhs

In languages, firstly concrete concepts have taken shape, then abstract forms of these concepts have emerged. One of these is the concept of “awakening”. The concept in question means oyanuw in Kazakh language. Parallel to the embodiment of the language, while the concept of “awakening” was previously expressing a person’s waking up after sleeping, then it becomes to express human’s liberation from unawareness and carelessness. Texts which are belonging to Soviet and post-Soviet (independence years) period present to us important data for this matter. Famous Kazakh poet Abay, who lived in 19th century call to Kazakh people in this way: “Wake up from sleeping of awareness, be a man!” This concept has an important place in the works of Kazakh intellectuals who lived at the beginnings of 20th century like Mirjakıp Dulatov, Ahmet Baytursınov, Mağcan Cumabayev. For example, Ahmet Baytursınov, has written his book called Masa (gnat, mosquito) to save Kazakh people from foreign ideology. Baytursınov, said in the introduction of this work: “I wanted to sting my people who has fallen asleep of unawareness and awake them from this deep sleeping.” Moving from this idea, Mirjakıp Dulatov has written his book called Oyan Kazak “Wake Up Kazakh” and said in this work: “Open your eye, wake up Kazakh, lift up your head, Don’t spend uselessly your years in the dark.” These verses, had become slogan of the Kazakh intellectuals in the years of 1930-1940 which are accepted as Kazakhs’ national awakening period. In 1990s, after the collapse of Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, a new awakening period has begun; new awakening began to develop with 1986 “Jeltoksan” events. Kazakh people, waked up from “sleeping of century” and has begun to ways of claiming national, moral, historical values especially his native language. In this presentation, perception of the concept of awakening in abstract meaning between Kazakh people will be studied.

The word çocuk means piglet in Divanu Lugati’t-Turk. Later on, this word was also meant child in some Turkic languages, an example of meaning improvement. However the word written as cocuk preserved its original meaning in Turkmen. In Turkmen, when some words were uttered, it is easily understood that the word is about children by people who speak that language. In other words, when these words are used, children come to mind: bala “child”, çağa “child”, doğma “son”, perzent “generation, child” etc. On the other hand, some of aforementioned words describe the children indirectly. These words are used figuratively. All of these words means ‘affectinately loved’ child. They frequently used when children are called out: ciğerbent “literally ‘the tissue connecting liver to the body’, the child who is loved very much”, köşek “literally ‘the baby camel’, a nich name used for cute children”, mazı “literally ‘a type of melon’, a nich name used for cute children”. It is possible to come accress these type of expression variety in other languages as well as Turkic languages.

Modern Azerbaijani poet Muhammed Hüseyin Şehriyar (1906-1988), who is one of the biggest poets of the Turkish world, lived in South Azerbaijan. His the biggest masterpiece is Haydar Bara’ya Selâm poem. This poem is be named from Village Haydar Baba, where he was born, is founded on hillside of Mount Haydar Baba. This Poem, a new form, is written syllabic meter of eleven and 125 ‘five line-stanza’. In this article, Haydar Baba’ya Selâm is analyzed by the method of ontological analysis. Although, this method is old one, it is rarely practiced in Turkey. According to this method, a literary work is composed of different categories and as understanding its value, these categories is analyzed separately. These categories is seperated two main headlines: Voices which constitute woords and semantics which is seperated different subheades. In this area, İsmail Tunalı wrote the book of Sanat Ontolojisi which is the most competent work in Turkey. In Sanat Ontolojisi, Tunalı analyzed views of Roman İngarden and Nicolai Hartmann and than he offered the combined method which is composed of their methods. We practice only seven ‘five line-stanza’s of Haydar Baba’ya Selâm by the method in this article. Because this poem is very long and it is impossible analyzing in an article.

Ottoman Empire recognized Armenians who are connected to Gregorian denomination as an independent community like Orthodox and Jews and gave them many rights and privileges for religion and culture. But because of the affect of Catholic missioners who showed activity in Ottoman Empire the unity of denomination among Armenians had been disturbed since XVI century and Ottoman Empire recognized Catholic Armenians as a community in 1830. From the beginning of XIX century Protestant missioners tried to affect Armenians. As a result of this effort of Protestant missioners most Armenians embraced Protestantism and in 1850 Protestant Armenian Community disengaged from Armenian Church (patriarchate). Thus Armenians’ dimidiation of denomination for the second time received negative reaction from both Armenian Church (patriarchate) and Gregorian Armenians Community. Disagreement between these two denominations turned into conflicts and continued till XIX century.

Being the leader of Turkish National Struggle and founder of Turkish Republic, Atatürk proved such an eminent leader that many other countries, nations and leaders took him as a source of inspiration, a good model in other words. He showed himself as a leading person in Turkish Nationalist Movement, which started rising after the 19th century, followed changes and development experienced in the world closely and most importantly was a very well-educated person. He always adopted a stable and self-consistent policy while implementing his revolutions with the public’s support. Nadir Shah, the third leader throning to Afghanistan during Atatürk era, was a soldier like Atatürk. Being aware of importance both Turkey and Atatürk posed for his country, Afghanistan, Nadir Shah like Emanullah realized crucial role of maintaining friendly relations with newly-founded Turkish Republic with an eye to contribute to Afghansitan’s welfare and development. Hence, he struggled hard to establish communication with Atatürk’s Turkey. He showed his determination in this aspect by asking for the Turkish ambassador’s idea while he was being throned to rule. Furthermore, the message he sent to Atatürk to celebrate anniversary of Turkish Republic just after he was throned was an obvious sign of this loyality and interest.

The Ottoman and Spanish empires struggled for the control of the Mediterranean during the 16th century but they withdrew their forces from this conflict for other priorities at the end of the century. In the 17th and 18th centuries their power decreased and classical institutions were damaged. The Ottomans and Spanish tried to restore their former glory by reforming their institutions. The Ottomans and Spanish re-established their political and economic relations and signed a treaty of neutrality in 1782. Thus, the Ottomans had an important support against the Russian presence in the Mediterranean. Spain, after re-establishing relations with the Ottomans, appointed their first permanent ambassador to İstanbul and Don Juan de Bouligny started his mission in 1783. He worked to establish the embassy, find translators and dragomans, release the Spanish prisoners in the Ottoman lands. After the French Revolution, a struggle occured between the pro-French and anti-French diplomats in İstanbul. Spain signed an alliance with the Revolutionary France in 1796, and the Spanish vessels joined the French armada to occupy Egypt. Bouligny ordered the Spanish consulates in the Mediterranean to assist the French armada. That was why, the first Spanish permanent representative in İstanbul, Don Juan de Bouligny was declared persona non grata and deported in 1799. However, friendly relations with Spain was preserved.
