Ottoman Poets’ Aruz Meter Choices For Use And Unnecessary Interventions Of The Researchers

Aruz meter was an invention of Arabs. Persians took this system and adapted it to their own language. After relations with Persians Ottomans began to use it according to the rules of the Ottoman language which was composed of Arabic, Persian and Turkish. The rules applied even today related to Aruz meter, like short syllables, long syllables, “med”, “imale” and “zihaf” were transferred to Ottomans from Arabic and Persian literature sources. Did the Ottoman poets strictly obey the rules of Aruz faults when they applied them to their own poems or did they choose to use some practical changes according to their wills? In this proceeding the answers to these questions are presented under these titles: “The faults arising from the researchers who can’t apply the Aruz faults to the texts and who intervene unnecessarily to the texts”, “Prejudices about the copyists”, “The verses that are thought to have meter defects and solution suggestions about them”.

Since the aim of language (communication) is to transfer the meaning, written language has an important function in this context. The meaning to be formed through written language depends on written expression to be correct and accomodating gramer rules. Writing shapes thought or meaning provided that it conforms with rules of the language. It should be taken into consideration that when expressed in written format, language, whose basic function is conveying meaning, gains value depending on the possibilities of writing. The existence of written expression depends on the rules of the language and the existence of thought. The rules of writing gets formalised in connection with grammer rules that emerges through the development process of the language. Then, there is a relation between grammer and both scripture (literary) and writing. Since the meaning and sound components lies in the foundation of grammer, this paper critizes the relationships between scripture (literary) and meaning and writing and sound. In doing so, the common structure between the rules of writing and meaning and sound systems of the language will be analysed. In order to support above mentioned argument of the paper, the relationships of meaning-scripture (literary), and of writing-sound are explained based upon relevant literature. next, the existence of such relationship is critically analysed though the examples taken from “writing guidance” publishhed by Turkish LAnguage Institution in 2005. In conclusion, the rules of writing in Turkish is constructed based upon the characteristics of meaning and sound. however, some of the meaning cases are not reflected in the rules of language writing. Therefore, phonetic alphabet and expression suits Turkish language.

It is an important matter for researchers of old Turkish Literature how to convert suffixes whose vowel is not displayed with letters or vowel marks in Ottoman Turkish period from Arabic script into Latin. In the present study, it is tried to be explained how to read those suffixes through the rational data gathered from the texts with vowel markers and with transcription.

Risale-i Cevahirnâme, written in the 16th century is an important text for linguistics study since many harekes that indicate some features peculiar to Balkan’s dialects. These are the primary features that make such texts more crucial in regard to linguistics. Therefore, it is necessary to be adhered very strictly to harekes as the transliterations of the text are prepared. Additionally, in order to prevent the problems of grammar that may occur as the transliterations of late Ottoman texts are prepared, it is quite important to determine the criterions regarding “what extent we intervene to what”. The characteristics of Avni’s Divan of Trabzon written in the late 19th century are of qualification that informs us about these criterions.

“The Turk means language. One of the distinctive features of nationalism is language. If one says ‘I am from Turkey’, he must certainly speak in Turkish’’ Now that one of the conditions of being Turk is to use Turkish language in the best way, it should not only be valid for the spoken but literary language. Because literary language has a direct relationship with spelling, we preferred to study language problems. Since it is a part of Kemalism, we selected the subject of ‘’Atatürk and Spelling’’.

The word “nice”, which generally defines ambiguity and has just one form in Turkish language of Turkey, was formed during Early Turkish period with fusion of the “ne” question word and +çA equality affix. In Azerbaijani Turkish, two seperate word derived from this word are being used: nėçe (how many, how much, how long, too many, how so much) and “nėce” (how, why, which etc.” The fact that the Turkey Turkish’s nice word has two seperate forms as nėçe and nėce in Azerbaijani Turkish precluded to determine the forms and meanings of this word in the historicsal processes. This fault of meaning determination stems from confusion of “how” and how many” meanings to the nėçe which is the old form of the word. This fault of determination is also related to the lack of determination from texts of sound events such as e> i closing and ç> c intonation. In this word, of which the first syllable assumed to be closed during the Kipchak Turkish period, had ç> c variance during the Old Anatolian Turkish period. While the näçä> niçe (how many? How much?) usages are going on since beginning, nice form with the letter “c” had been used with those meanings: “how, in which condition, which”. In this work, çalışmayla neçe> niçe> nėçe (how many?) and neçe> nice> nėce (how?) processes are examined.

Every single study that has been written during the historical periods gives us information about the people, ideological structure, emotional world, public governance and especially the articulation way of the language of that particular age. In this viewpoint, texts with vowel point (in Arabic script) are important to emphasize the historical developments and the changes that language has faced. In this study, some punctuation characteristics of two texts with vowel point (in Arabic script) that belong to the 17th of century, Fârisî Divançesi and Kâdirî Muhyiddin Nasihatnâme are scrutinized. Two texts one of which is written in Istanbul Turkish and the other one which is close to the spoken language of the public that is written in order to give advice are taken into consideration in this study. With the help of these two texts, some determinations about the punctuation of 17th century writings are concluded. The relationship between meter and punctuation attracts attention in these works. The fact that both works employ this feature makes it necessary to study these texts in accordance with this feature.
