The interpretations concerning the reality of the Sabians are among the topics where significant differences of opinion exist. The Qur’an does not elaborate on their nature, but mentions them within the context of followers of divine laws: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Therefore, exegetes and jurists have endeavored to define them, relying on the accounts they received from those who lived among them, met them, or heard about them from the People of the Book in general, as well as direct observation of some of these communities. It seems that the attention given by exegetes, particularly those concerned with jurisprudential aspects, was greater than others, due to the legal implications of understanding their reality. Questions such as whether they belong to the People of the Book or are considered disbelievers to whom the rulings applicable to non-believers apply were central. Furthermore, what do the Sabians themselves state about their identity today through their sacred book? This study addresses this significant topic by comparing what general exegetes and jurists have written with what appears in the Sabians’ sacred text. The study is organized around the following themes:
Introducing the Sabians and their historical and contemporary areas of distribution.
The Qur’anic context in which they are mentioned, along with the views of exegetes and jurists.
The Sabians as represented in their sacred book, Kinza Rba.
The study reached several conclusions, the most important of which are:
The Sabian religion initially called for monotheism and is ancient, dating back to the pre-Abrahamic era, during which they worshipped celestial bodies.
The differences among exegetes regarding the true nature of the Sabian religion stem from the multiplicity of its sects and the disagreements among them.
The Kinza Rba advocates the worship of God alone and forbids the worship of planets, Satan, deities, and base desires, although it does not promote pure monotheism.
Based on the foregoing, the study leans toward considering the Mandaean Sabians as People of the Book, not associating them with disbelievers. The study adopted a descriptive, analytical, and comparative approach.
