Abstract

Abstract

This study examines how oral epic becomes popular cinema without treating media change as linear progress. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey (2026) is approached as an adaptation event in which Homeric narrative, star performance, large-format cinematography, theatrical exhibition and digital paratexts operate together. The case is compared with the screen history and possibilities of Dede Korkut. Document and paratext analysis is applied to epic texts, Nolan’s film, Dede Korkut films, animation research, the UNESCO record, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and the Face Your Fate photo generator. Five operations are identified: narrative condensation, sensorial enlargement, star embodiment, participatory circulation and cultural localisation. IMAX intensifies scale, sound and collective spectatorship but does not make a fixed film interactive; interaction arises in games, social media and personalised interfaces. Dede Korkut films show that humour and reference can renew audience contact, although comic and child-oriented circulation narrows the tradition’s tragic, ethical and spectacular range. Basat–Tepegöz, Deli Dumrul, Bamsı Beyrek and Salur Kazan provide foundations for epic cinema, serial drama and games. An international Dede Korkut screen culture should not imitate Hollywood mythology. It should translate speech, music, landscape, communal ethics and narrative variability into cinematic form, with artificial intelligence used only as transparent supporting technology.
