Abstract

This study, supported by the Scientific Research Projects program of Ankara Music and Fine Arts University during the 2023–2024 academic year, addresses the accessibility challenges that symbolic structures and specialized notation systems in music materials pose for visually impaired musicians. Particularly, the heavy reliance of harmony and music theory textbooks on visual elements hinders the equal and effective participation of visually impaired individuals in higher music education. The primary aim of this research is to document the transcription process of a harmony textbook into Braille format for use by visually impaired students studying in music departments, and to evaluate the accessibility of the resulting material through user experience. The study was conducted as a qualitative case study. It proceeded in three stages: digitization of the selected textbook, transcription into Braille music notation, and evaluation of the final material. The evaluation was carried out by six visually impaired experts—academics, music teachers, and musicians—with experience in Braille music notation and Western music harmony. Data were collected through observation notes taken during the transcription process and interviews conducted with structured questions, and were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The findings indicate that the Braille version of the textbook is accessible and comprehensible, can serve as a functional educational resource, and that the symbol adaptation strategies developed during the transcription process are feasible and applicable.

Structured Abstract

Introduction and Purpose of the Study

One of the main challenges faced by students with visual impairments in music education is the lack of accessible instructional materials, particularly for music theory and harmony courses that involve dense symbolic content. Previous studies conducted in Türkiye have emphasized the insufficiency of music resources printed in Braille. In recent years, the increasing admission of students with visual impairments to higher education music programs has made this need more visible. However, existing initiatives have largely focused on performance-based music materials, while comprehensive Braille resources for music theory remain limited. This study was conducted during the 2024–2025 academic year at Ankara Music and Fine Arts University. The aim of the research is to document the transcription process of a harmony textbook into Braille music notation and to examine expert evaluations of the accessibility, clarity, and functionality of the resulting material. Accordingly, the study seeks to answer the following research question: How was the transcription process of a harmony textbook into Braille music notation carried out, and how is the resulting accessible resource evaluated by its users in higher education music programs?

Literature Review / Background

The existing literature indicates that Braille music resources for visually impaired individuals in Türkiye are insufficient, particularly in theoretical domains, and that current efforts have largely focused on performance-based materials. This study aims to address this gap by focusing on the Braille transcription of harmony, a field characterized by high symbolic complexity.

 Theoretical / Conceptual Framework

This study is grounded in the principles of inclusive education and accessibility, focusing on the transformation of symbolic structures in music theory into Braille music notation. The process is conceptualized as the adaptation of a symbolic musical language into tactile and textual representations, ensuring both technical accuracy and pedagogical functionality.

Methodology

The study was designed as a qualitative case study. The process consisted of three main stages: first, the selected harmony textbook was digitized; second, it was transcribed into Braille music notation; and third, the resulting material was evaluated by users. Participants were selected using purposive sampling and the maximum variation sampling method to ensure a diverse representation. The study group consisted of two subgroups: the first included the project team involved in the transcription process; the second comprised visually impaired individuals who evaluated the Braille-format harmony textbook as users.

Data were collected through structured online interview forms and observation notes taken throughout the transcription process. Interview questions were organized thematically and reviewed for content validity. The collected data were analyzed using the descriptive analysis method. To ensure interpretative reliability, coding was conducted in collaboration with two experts. Additionally, data triangulation techniques were applied to enhance the validity and reliability of the research findings.

Findings

During the process of reconstructing the printed harmony textbook using music notation software and converting it into BRF (Braille Ready Format), several symbols were not recognized by the software. As a result, new symbols were developed specifically for this book. Alternative representations were created particularly for figured bass, inversion degrees, chord annotations, and various graphical indicators. These newly developed symbols were supported with explanatory notes provided in the introductory section of the Braille book.

Visual elements were conveyed through textual descriptions. Explanatory elements such as lines, arrows, and inversions positioned on the staff were reformatted as separate text entries, while chord inversions and interval indications were embedded as staff text. Additionally, graphics and photographs in the original textbook were described in detail along with corresponding page numbers to ensure accessibility.

User evaluations were organized around five main themes: physical structure, clarity and content coherence, functionality, technical compliance, and suggestions. Participants reported that the Braille harmony book was generally readable, accessible, and functionally adequate. The digital format, in particular, was seen as advantageous for portability and usability in educational settings. However, participants also noted issues such as incomplete adherence to Braille writing standards, insufficient explanation of certain symbols, and challenges in the placement of page numbers. Furthermore, users suggested that both abbreviated and full versions of the Braille format be provided, and that the book be divided into multiple volumes to enhance accessibility and usability.

Conclusion and Discussion

This study has demonstrated that the transcription of a symbol-based harmony textbook into Braille music notation is both feasible and educationally valuable. However, the process required not only technical adaptation but also pedagogical and standards-based adjustments. The research provides original contributions in areas such as the adaptability of symbols in Braille music notation, user interaction with the content, and the overall functionality of the material as an educational resource.

The findings highlight a pressing need for institutional and sustainable frameworks for the production of accessible music materials in Türkiye. Furthermore, the lack of Turkish-language resources on Braille music transcription underscores the need to develop trained human resources in this field. There is also a clear demand for comprehensive strategies to produce materials aligned with international accessibility standards and to expand their application across different domains of music education. Although the study is limited by its small sample size and its focus on a single textbook, it nonetheless represents a pioneering effort in the field of accessible music theory, offering an important foundational model for future developments for researchers, educators, and policymakers in inclusive music education.
