Abstract

Abstract

Animal style has held an important place in Turkish art since early periods and has been widely used in various branches of art. Animal figures are especially common in halkâr decorations adorning the margins of manuscript pages. These figures appear not only as ornamental elements in manuscript illumination but also as symbolic representations carrying various meanings and narratives. In Turkish and Eastern art, animal combat scenes have been among the significant depictions symbolizing concepts such as power, dominance, struggle for life, sky-earth duality, victory-defeat, light-darkness, and good-evil.  This study examines the Anthology Divan located in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris, authored by Amir Khusrau Dehlavi and copied by Malik al-Daylami. The depictions of lion-gazelle and crane-eagle combat scenes found in the halkâr designs of the manuscript constitute the main subject of the research. In the halkâr decorations of the manuscript illuminated with gold, many different animal combat scenes appear besides the lion- gazelle and eagle-crane struggles. By describing the animal combat scenes in the halkâr designs of the manuscript, the metaphorical meanings attributed to these animal figures from a mythological perspective have been discussed. In these combat scenes the lion figure mythologically represents victory, superiority, strength, power, and protection, while also being associated with divine might and sovereignty. Furthermore, it is interpreted within the triangle of sun-god-power. The gazelle figure, besides being associated with innocence, is related to the earthly element and is portrayed as a metaphor symbolizing defeat, weakness, timidity, and vulnerability. The eagle figure is depicted as a symbol associated with ancestral power, magnificence, supremacy, and sovereignty connected to celestial elements. The crane figure symbolizes wisdom and authority, while also representing longevity, spiritual journey, and elegance. In the combat scenes discussed in the halkâr designs, the eagle and lion figures are portrayed as predators, whereas the crane and gazelle figures are depicted as prey.

Structured Abstract:

Animal combat scenes are significant iconographic motifs in Turkish and Eastern artistic traditions, appearing in various branches of art since the early periods and conveying rich symbolic and mythological meanings. These scenes are not merely depictions reflecting predator-prey relationships; rather, they emerge as symbolic representations expressing power, dominance, victory, defeat, and the struggle between opposing forces. Although such depictions are encountered in various fields of art, they occupy a particularly prominent place in the ornamentation of manuscripts. Animal figures depicted in manuscripts are regarded as significant iconographic elements that convey the mythological narratives, belief systems, and symbolic values of societies through a visual language. These animal figures are reflected in the depictions through the value systems of the cultures to which they belong, and the meanings attributed to them.

The aim of this study is to identify the lion-gazelle and crane-eagle combat scenes depicted in the manuscript entitled Selections (Seçmeler), attributed to Amir Khusraw Dehlavi and registered under inventory number Persan 245 at the National Library of France (Bibliothèque Nationale de France), and to examine the symbolic and mythological meanings attributed to these animal figures from an iconographic perspective, thereby revealing the metaphorical meanings of their depictions within halkâr illumination.

The existing literature indicates that studies addressing the symbolic and mythological aspects of animal combat scenes in the halkâr illumination of manuscripts through a holistic approach are limited. In particular, the insufficient number of studies examining the mythological meanings associated with the lion-gazelle and crane-eagle figures and the visual forms of expression of these figures in the arts of the book constitutes the starting point of this study. Furthermore, no studies specifically addressing combat depictions in book arts, particularly those found in halkâr illumination, have been encountered. This research reveals the symbolic and mythological layers of meaning associated with the figures represented in animal combat scenes and proposes a model for interpreting their reflections in halkâr illumination.

This study is based on a descriptive survey design within the qualitative research framework. The data were obtained from the digital database of the National Library of France. Document analysis of the library's digital collection was conducted for data collection. The work Selections (Seçmeler), which contains combat scenes, was identified and its general characteristics were examined. The animal combat scenes depicted in the halkâr illumination of the manuscript were then identified. Although numerous combat depictions involving different animal figures were found in the manuscript, the study was limited to lion-gazelle and crane-eagle combat scenes. The literature review focused on Amir Khusraw Dehlavi, mythology, animal symbolism, the arts of the book, and iconography. The selected combat scenes in the manuscript were evaluated within the framework of the mythological meanings of the figures, their visual arrangements in halkâr illumination, and their metaphorical modes of expression.

According to the research findings, the manuscript consists of 43 folios and contains a total of 86 page sides. The manuscript features pages arranged on backgrounds of various colors. When the distribution of colours is evaluated on the basis of page sides, buff-coloured grounds were used on 20 page sides, salmon-coloured grounds on 23, green-coloured grounds on 16, blue-coloured grounds on 14, and yellow-coloured grounds on 7. In addition, blue marbled paper was used on 2 page sides. A total of 82 page surfaces with identifiable background colors were recorded. Animal combat scenes involving 12 different pairs of animals were identified on 38 folios (88.4%) of the manuscript. The lion-gazelle and crane-eagle combat depictions that constitute the scope of this study appear on 22 folios (51.2%). Of these scenes, 19 (86.4%) are lion-gazelle combat scenes and 3 (13.6%) are crane-eagle combat scenes. In addition, it was determined that some folios contain more than one combat scene, resulting in a total of 56 combat scenes. Of these scenes, 20 (35.7%) are lion-gazelle combats, 14 (25%) are tiger-gazelle combats, 5 (8.9%) are gazelle-eagle combats, and 5 (8.9%) are crane-eagle combats. Fox-gazelle combats were identified in 4 examples (7.1%), while dragon-dragon combats were identified in 2 examples (3.6%). Crane-crane, crane-fish, dragon-gazelle, dragon-lion, goose-goose, and bear-tiger combats were each identified in 1 example (1.8%). The findings demonstrate that among the animal combat scenes, lion-gazelle depictions are markedly dominant and constitute the principal recurring iconographic arrangement in the manuscript.

In this study, the depictions of the animal combat scenes in Dehlavi's Selections (Seçmeler) were examined from a mythological perspective. The eagle-crane and lion-gazelle depictions represented in the dual combat scenes of the halkâr ornamentation were described together with the symbols and meanings attributed to these figures and their visual representations in the compositions. Symbolically, the lion figure is associated with meanings such as sovereignty, power, protection, victory, divine power, order, authority, and courage, and emerges in combat scenes as the figure that hunts, prevails, and establishes dominance. The gazelle represents the oppressed and defeated side through its graceful, vulnerable, helpless, and fearful characteristics. The crane, with its physically fragile, delicate, and vulnerable nature, represents weakness in the face of the eagle's superiority. At the same time, it is associated with wisdom and the essence of a sacred spiritual journey. The eagle, on the other hand, represents sublimity as a powerful figure and the sovereign of the sky, emerging as a metaphorical representation of power and sacredness through its establishment of dominance and superiority in combat scenes.

This study contributes original data to the literature on the evaluation of the mythological, symbolic, and iconographic meanings of animal combat scenes in the book arts. It also contributes to the interpretation of figures in halkâr ornamentation not only through their visual characteristics but also within their cultural, mythological, and symbolic contexts. A distinctive aspect of the study is its adoption of a holistic approach that examines these combat depictions by integrating research findings with mythological and iconographic analyses. The methodological framework of the study provides a model that can be applied not only to the lion–gazelle and crane–eagle combat scenes discussed herein but also to the iconographic analysis of animal combat scenes in manuscripts. Accordingly, this research serves as an example for comparative studies of animal combat scenes in different manuscripts, investigations into the cross-cultural symbolic meanings of these figures, and more comprehensive evaluations of animal iconography in the book arts.
