Dil göstergelerden oluşan dinamik bir sistemdir ve gösteren ve gösterilen düzlemlerinde zaman içinde değişim geçirebilmektedir. Bazen yalnız bu düzlemlerde değişim olurken bazen de göstergenin kendisi kullanımdan düşebilmektedir. Bu değişimler genellikle uzun bir süreçte, konuşurlarının uzlaşımına dayalı gerçekleşmektedir. Bu süreç dilin toplumsal, kültürel ve düşünsel yapısındaki dönüşümlerle ilişkilidir. Türkçede Köktürkçeden günümüze ulaşan birçok sözcük vardır. Bunların bir kısmı biçimsel ve anlamsal değişime uğramıştır. Bu değişimler Türkçenin o zamandan şimdiye geçirdiği tarihî, kültürel, toplumsal dönüşümlerin ve dilin kendi canlı yapısından kaynaklanan bir gerekliliğin sonucudur.

Bu çalışmada, yavuz sözcüğünün tarihsel gelişimi art ve eş zamanlı şekilde incelenmiştir. Köktürkçe metinlerde yabız biçiminde “kötü, fena, perişan” anlamlarında kullanılan bu sözcük, zamanla ses değişimlerine uğrayarak günümüz Türkçesindeki yavuz biçimine dönüşmüş ve anlam bakımından iyileşme göstermiştir. Çalışmamızda Türkçede uzun zamandır varlığını koruyan yavuz sözcüğünün etimolojisiyle ilgili bilgi verilmiş; ardından dilbilimsel bir yaklaşım olan art ve eş zamanlı incelemeyle sözcüğün tarihî süreçte geçirdiği biçimsel ve anlamsal değişim gösterilmiştir. Günümüz Türkçesinde sözcüğün atasözlerindeki kullanımları da aktarılmış ve çağdaş Türk lehçe ve şivelerindeki varlığına da yer verilmiştir.

Çalışma nitel araştırma yöntemleriyle yürütülmüş, veriler doküman analizi yoluyla elde edilip betimsel analiz yöntemiyle analiz edilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular, yavuz sözcüğünün tarihsel süreçte hem biçim hem de anlam değişikliğine uğradığını, anlam değişikliğinin iyileşme yönünde olduğunu ve Yeni Türkçe dönemine tekabül ettiğini; anlamdaki bu değişimin Oğuz Türkçesi etkisi olabileceğini göstermiştir. Ayrıca sözcüğün çağdaş Türk lehçelerindeki karşılıkları değerlendirilerek anlam değişiminin yönü ve kapsamı belirlenmiştir. Bu bağlamda çalışma, Türkçedeki uzun ömürlü sözcüklerin anlam düzlemindeki ilerleyişine ışık tutmakta ve dilin tarihsel sürekliliği içinde göstergelerin dönüşümünü ortaya koymaktadır.

Language is a dynamic system composed of linguistic signs, and both the signifier and signified planes can undergo change over time. Sometimes only these planes change, while at other times the sign itself may fall out of use. These changes generally occur over a long period, based on the consensus of speakers. This process is related to transformations in the social, cultural and intellectual structure of the language. There are many words in Turkish that have survived from Old Turkic to the present day. Some of these have undergone formal and semantic changes. These changes are the result of the historical, cultural and social transformations that Turkish has undergone from that time to the present, and of a necessity arising from the living nature of the language itself.

In this study, the historical development of the word yavuz has been examined both retrospectively and synchronically. This word, used in Old Turkic texts in the form yabız to mean ‘bad, evil, wretched,’ has undergone sound changes over time, transforming into the modern Turkish form yavuz and showing an improvement in meaning. Our study provides information on the etymology of the word yavuz, which has long been preserved in Turkish; then, using a linguistic approach involving diachronic and synchronic analysis, it demonstrates the formal and semantic changes the word has undergone throughout history. The usage of the word in proverbs in modern Turkish is also conveyed, and its presence in contemporary Turkish dialects and accents is also mentioned.

The study was conducted using qualitative research methods, with data obtained through document analysis and analysed using descriptive analysis methods. The findings revealed that the word yavuz underwent both formal and semantic changes throughout history, that the semantic change was positive in nature and corresponded to the New Turkish period, and that this change in meaning may have been influenced by Oğuz Turkish. Furthermore, the word's equivalents in contemporary Turkish dialects were evaluated to determine the direction and scope of the change in meaning. In this context, the study sheds light on the progression of long-lived words in Turkish in terms of meaning and reveals the transformation of signs within the historical continuity of the language.
