Cumhuriyet’in ilanından sonra Türkiye’de nüfusun %80’ini oluşturan köylerde okuma yazma bilen nüfusun çok az olması nedeniyle birtakım eğitim politikaları geliştirilmeye çalışılmıştır. Köylerin kalkınması, öğretmen sorunu vb. nedenlerle ilk eğitmen kursu Eskişehir Çiftelerde 1936-1937 eğitim öğretim yılında açılmıştır. Bu kursların açılmasında dönemin Milli Eğitim Bakanı Hasan Ali Yücel ve İlköğretim Genel Müdürü İsmail Hakkı Tonguç’un büyük katkısı olmuştur. Eğitmen Kursları, 17 Nisan 1940 tarihinde 3803 Sayılı Köy Enstitüleri Kanunuyla Köy Enstitülerine dönüştürülmüştür. Bu okullara, ilkokuldan mezun olan öğrencilerden sınav yapılarak öğrenci alınmış olup, okulda verilen genel dersler ve öğretmenlik dersleriyle ülkenin hem öğretmen sorunu giderilmeye çalışılmış hem de verilen teknik ve ziraat dersleriyle köylerin kalkınması amaçlanmıştır. 1939 yılında Gönen’de, Eğitmen Yetiştirme Kursu olarak açılan Gönen Eğitmen Kursu, 24 Nisan 1940 tarihinde 120 öğrencisiyle eğitmen okulu olarak faaliyete geçmiştir. Denizli, Burdur ve Isparta’dan 40’ar toplamda 120 öğrenci bu okulun ilk öğrencileri olmuştur. 1943-1944 eğitim-öğretimine yılına kadar 4 yıllık eğitim veren Gönen Köy Enstitüsü bu yıldan itibaren 5 yıllık eğitime başlamıştır. Ancak 1949-1950 eğitim öğretim yılında bu okullara hazırlık sınıfı da getirilmiştir. Gönen Köy Enstitüsü, 1954’te 6234 Sayılı Kanun’la köy enstitülerinin öğretmen okulları ile birleştirilmesiyle Gönen İlköğretmen Okulu adını almıştır. Gönen Köy Enstitüsü, 1955 yılına kadar 42 kız, 883 erkek öğretmen mezun etmiş ve 925 mezun öğretmeni ülkenin çeşitli yerlerinde görev yapmıştır. Bu çalışmada; 1940-1954 yılları arasında öğretmen yetiştirmek amacıyla faaliyet gösteren köy enstitüleri hakkında genel bilgi verildikten sonra Gönen Köy Enstitüsü’nün tarihsel gelişimi, faaliyetleri, öğretmen ve öğrenci bilgileri aktarılarak Gönen Köy Enstitüsü’nün Türkiye’nin eğitimine katkılarının ortaya çıkarılması amaçlanmıştır.
