Sıradan bir kasaba olan Ankara Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin başkenti olduğunda ciddi bir planlama deneyimine sahne olur. Yeni rejimin temsil mekânı haline gelen yeni başkent, modern mimarisi ve Cumhuriyeti simgeleyen yapılarıyla, tarihsel olarak Cumhuriyet’le de özdeşleşir. Cumhuriyet’i temsil eden Ulus Meydanı ise hem kentin en önemli meydanlarından biridir hem de Cumhuriyet ideolojisi ile ulusal ideallerin biçimlendiği en itibarlı kentsel mekânlardandır. Daha önce de önemli bir merkez olan Ulus Meydanı, Ankara başkent olduğunda önemli bir değişim geçirmiştir. Başkent Ankara’nın en önemli temsil mekanlarından olan Ulus Meydanı, Cumhuriyetle beraber adeta başkalaşım geçirir. Cumhuriyetin ilk ve en önemli merkezi olan meydanın zamanla değiştiğini ve şekillendiğini rahatlıkla söyleyebiliriz. Bu çalışma Ulus meydanının değişim öyküsünü filmler ve tarihsel veriler aracılığıyla incelemeyi, meydanı ve söz konusu değişimi filmler üzerinden tanımlamayı hedeflemektedir.  Sinema ve kent sıklıkla ilişkilendirilmiştir; çünkü modern kentle var olan sinema sanatı kentle etkileşim içindedir. İnsanların yaşam biçimlerini etkileyen sinema yaşam ve kent örüntüleriyle de şekillenir. Anlattıkları hikâyelerle kenti kaydeden filmler, aynı zamanda geçmişe tanıklık eden tarihsel bir belgedir. Bu bağlamda, Ankara Ulus Meydanında geçen filmler aracılığıyla bir kent yorumu sunan bu çalışma Ankara kent belleğine bir katkı yapmayı hedeflemektedir. Bu doğrultuda öncelikle kentin dönüşümü tespit edilmiştir. Ardından Ankara Ulus Meydanında geçen filmler üzerinden, tarihsel verilerle karşılaştırmalı olarak, meydanın değişim öyküsü tanımlanmıştır. 

Ankara, following the transformation from an ordinary town to the capital city of the Republic of Turkey, becomes the site for serious planning. It turns into the space for the representation of the new regime. This new capital, with its modern architecture and the buildings symbolizing the Republic, is historically identical with the Republic itself. Ulus Square, which represents the Republic, is one of the most important squares of the city. This square is also one of the most prestigious urban locations where national ideals and the ideology of the Republic are shaped. It was an important center before, but when Ankara becomes the capital it undergoes serious changes. Ulus Square, one of the most important representation venues of the capital Ankara, undergoes a metamorphosis with the republic. We can easily say that the square, the first and most important center of the republic, has changed and shaped over time. This paper examines the transformation story of the square through films and historical data and aims to define the square and its change through films. The relationship between cinema and city is a subject that has been studied extensively. Because as an art form cinema exists within the modern city and it is in interaction with the city. Although cinema has an impact on people’s lifestyles, it is also shaped by the patterns of life and the city. Furthermore, while telling stories motion pictures record the city and this turns them into witnesses of the past and important historical documents. Therefore, through films taking place in Ankara Ulus square, this paper offers an interpretation of the urban and aims to contribute to the urban memory of Ankara. In line with this purpose, first the urban transformation is identified and then the films which take place in Ulus Square are selected. Through these films and a comparison with historical data, transformation story of the square is defined.
