Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Paşa Ürgüp-Muşkara doğumludur. Genç yaşında İstanbul’a gelmiş, Sultan Üçüncü Ahmet şehzade iken onun maiyetinde bulunmuş, şehzade padişah olunca da sadrazam olmuştur. Nevşehirlinin parlak bir tahsili yoktur. Okuma yazmayı Saray’a girdikten sonra öğrenmiştir. İleri görüşlü ve yenilikçi bir kafa yapısına sahiptir. “Avrupa’nın ümran ve maarifini dikkatle tetkik etmek üzere”, Yirmisekiz Çelebi Mehmet’i Fransa’ya gönderen odur. Aynı şekilde bütün zorluklarına rağmen İlk Türk matbaasının açılışını temin eden ve buna mümasil çok sayıda yeniliğe imza atan yine o olmuştur. Nevşehirli’ye gelinceye kadar hiç kimse bu tür önemli hamlelere girişmeye cesaret edememiştir. Nevşehirli bu hamleleri ile Osmanlı sadrazamlarının en büyükleri arasına ismini yazdırmayı başarmıştır. Nevşehirlinin atılımları sayesinde Osmanlı tarihinde Sultan Üçüncü Ahmet döneminde çok parlak bir devir açılmıştır. Bu devrin adı “Lale Devri’dir. Söz konusu devir bir yenilik ve ilerleme devri olmasının yanında ayş u işretin ön plana çıkması bakımından ciddi eleştirilerin de hedefi olmuştur. Daha çok devletlilerin hayatına hâkim olan muhteşem lüks, zevk ü sefa ve hatta sefahate varan aşırılıklar başta dönemin kahramanı İbrahim Paşa olmak üzere rical-i devleti ağır bir gafletin içerisine sürüklemiştir. Devletlilerin aşırı lüks ve sefahatı geçim sıkıntısı ile cebelleşen halkı rahatsız etmiştir. Toplum kesimlerinden çok ciddi şikâyet ve yakınma sesleri yükselmeye başlamıştır. Ancak devletliler bu ıstırap ve yakınmayı görmemişler, görememişlerdir. Bütün bu hengâme içerisinde İbrahim Paşa, İran’a savaş açmak gibi stratejik bir hata yapmış, bu siyasi hata darbeyi tetiklemiştir. Patrona Halil önderliğinde büyük bir isyan başlamıştır. Sultan Üçüncü Ahmet asilerin isteği üzerine büyük vezirini feda ettiği gibi tahtını da yeğeni Birinci Mahmut’a terk etmek zorunda kalmıştır. Böylece büyük bir yenilik hamlesi oldukça hazin bir şekilde sona ermiş, parlak bir devir kapanmıştır.
