The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of the flipped classroom applications (FCA) on intellectual risk-taking abilities of 7th grade students and their views about these applications in reflection in mirrors and absorption of light unit. For this purpose, the study was carried out with the participation of 43 seventh grade students attending a public secondary school in Kastamonu Province, Turkey in the 2017-2018 academic year. One experimental group (21 students) and one control group (22 students) were randomly selected from this school. In the research, a mixed research design was used in which qualitative and quantitative research designs were included. Pre-test post-test control group quasi-experimental model was used to investigate the effectiveness of teaching supported by FCA on students’ intellectual risk-taking abilities. In addition, a semi-structured interviews were conducted with the six students in the experimental group about the FCA. While the lessons of the experimental group students were taught with the activities developed in accordance with the flipped classroom model, the lessons of the control group students were taught in compliance with the 2013 Science Curriculum. As data collection tools in research; Intellectual Risk-Taking Scale (IRTS) and Semi-Structured Interview (SSI) were used. As a result of the study, it was determined that there was no statistically significant difference between the experimental group students and the control group students in terms of intellectual risk-taking abilities. However, according to the mean scores of intellectual risk-taking abilities, it was determined that the intellectual risk-taking scale post-test mean score of the students in the experimental group was higher than the post-test mean score of the students in the control group. In addition, the students stated that they liked the applications in the semi-structured interview that they increased their interest in the course and that their lessons were fun. In order to increase the importance of using FCA in the science lesson, it is recommended to conduct researches on the different units of this course.
