Bu makalede 19. yüzyıl Türk düşünür ve uygulamacısı İsmail Hakkı Tonguç’un, Avrupa’da yükselişe geçen Hümanist Eğitim Yaklaşımını Cumhuriyet dönemi koşullarında nasıl yorumladığı ve eğitim uygulamalarında nasıl ortaya koyduğu, düşünürün kendi fikirlerinden hareketle tartışılması amaçlanmıştır. Ayrıca Tonguç’un uygulamalarındaki başarısının, onun insan anlayışı ve insana olan yaklaşımının hümanist eğitim ilkeleri açısından doğurgaları (içerimleri) değerlendirilmeye çalışılmıştır. Antik Yunan’dan günümüze uzanan ve evreni insanın merkezi konumuna alan hümanizm anlayışı, Rönesans’ta etkilerini göstermiş, Aydınlanma döneminin kapısını aralamıştır. Dolayısıyla modern Avrupa kültürünün temelini oluşturan Hümanizm, geniş kapsamlı bir kültür hareketi olmuştur. Kültürün yükselmesine bağlı olarak bilimde, sanatta ve eğitimde aynı zamanda ilerlemeler kaydedilmiştir. Eğitim ülküsü ve eğitim programları yeniden düzenlemiş, bireyin gelişmesinin ve yetkinleşmesinin önü açılmıştır. Avrupa’da bunlar gerçekleşirken henüz kurulan Türkiye’de eğitim reformlarına başlanmıştır. Gerçekleştirilmesi hedeflenen reformlar çerçevesinde eğitimde izlenecek yöntem belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Eğitimde atılacak adımlar için kilit bir konumda bulunan Tonguç’un eğitim uygulamaları incelendiğinde hümanist eğitim ilkelerinin Batıdan alındığı şekliyle birebir uygulamadığı; Türk insanının doğasını, duygusal yapısını, yerel özelliklerini, adetlerini, töresini, çevre koşullarını, toplumsal olarak gereken ihtiyaçlarını gözlemleyip, yapılması gereken adımları belirledikten sonra titizlikle uygulamaya koyduğu anlaşılmıştır. Bu anlamda Tonguç’un, Hümanist eğitimi anlayışını Türk insanının kültürel yapısına uygun olarak yorumlayarak fikirlerini hayata geçirdiği anlaşılmıştır. Çalışmaları sonucunda elde edilen başarı dünyaya örnek olmuştur. Başarısının altında yatan faktörlerin dönemin insanının gereksinimlerine ilişkin yaptığı doğru değerlendirmenin sonucu olduğu düşünülmektedir.

In this article, it is aimed to discuss how the 19th century Turkish thinker and practitioner İsmail Hakkı Tonguç interpreted the Humanist Approach to Education, which was on the rise in Europe, in the conditions of the Republican period and how he put it forward in his educational practices, based on the thinker's own ideas. In addition, it has been tried to evaluate the implications of Tonguç's success in his practices, his understanding of human beings and his approach to human beings in terms of humanist educational principles. The understanding of humanism, which extends from ancient Greece to the present and takes human being as the center of the universe, showed its effects in the Renaissance and opened the door to the Enlightenment period. Therefore, Humanism, which forms the basis of modern European culture, has been a comprehensive cultural movement. Due to the rise of culture, advances have been made in science, art and education at the same time. The ideal of education and educational programs have been reorganized and the way has been opened for the development and competence of the individual. While these are taking place in Europe, new educational reforms have just been started in Turkey, which has just been established. Within the framework of the reforms aimed to be realized, the method to be followed in education was tried to be determined. When the educational practices of İsmail Hakkı Tonguç, who is in a key position for the steps to be taken in education, are examined, it is observed that he did not take humanist education principles from the West and apply them directly, but took into account the nature, emotional structure, local characteristics, customs, traditions, environmental conditions, social needs of the Turkish people. It has been seen that he interpreted humanist education in accordance with the cultural structure of the Turkish people and implemented his ideas. The success achieved as a result of his work has set an example to the world. The factors underlying his success are thought to be the result of his accurate assessment of the needs of the people of the period.
