Metaphoric Perceptions of Health Vocational High School Students About Teacher Concept


Metaphor is the explanation of a concept or phenomenon by analogy with another concept or phenomenon. Metaphors, which enable the establishment of relationships by finding similarities with the previously known information and the concrete explanation of the new knowledge, are a powerful mental tool that the individual can use in understanding and explaining a highly abstract, complex or theoretical phenomenon. It is an effective way of explaining, transferring and understanding everything that concerns human and society. By means of metaphors that are frequently used in the education process, the student is provided to understand an unknown subject by associating it with a subject he / she knows. With this research, it was aimed to determine the metaphorical perceptions of health vocational high school students regarding the concept of teaching. The study group of the research, which has a qualitative design, consists of 145 students from Ankara Pursaklar Health Vocational High School. Araştırma verileri araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen yarı yapılandırılmış metafor formu kullanılarak elde edilmiştir. According to the research findings, health vocational high school students produced 47 valid metaphors regarding the concept of teacher. The average number of metaphors produced by a student is 0.32. 10 metaphors are above average and 37 metaphors are below average. When ranked according to frequencies of 10 metaphors above the average produced by 95 students, it is seen that the metaphor of mother/father takes the first place. This is followed by metaphors of family, educator / instructor, source of information, guide, angel, friend, book, tree and ball of love. The 37 metaphors below the average were produced by 50 students. 4 of them were produced by 3 students, 5 by 2 students and 28 by 1 student.
