Pre-Service Mathematics Teachers Views on the Use of Smart Board Technology

One of the most used educational technologies in recent years is smart board technology. Smart board technology offers several options for new learning and teaching environments. Teachers of the future should receive the necessary education to integrate this technology more effectively since Turkey and the world have made significant investments to expand the smart boards. This study aims to determine the views of pre- service mathematics teachers towards the use of smart board technology in their lessons. For this purpose, exploratory case study, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. 38 pre-service mathematics teachers studying in the second grade of a state university participated in the study. In the spring semester of the 2017- 2018 academic year, within the scope of the Instructional Technologies and Material Design course, the students were introduced to the smart board technology, the usage and installation technique was explained and a sample application was shown for the mathematics lesson. Students’ views about the use of the smart board were collected in writing through an interview form consisting of 7 open-ended questions. Content analysis was used to analyze the obtained data. According to the results of the analysis, pre-service mathematics teachers state that smart board technology is useful especially in geometry learning in mathematics lessons. Besides, the participants state that the use of the smart board technology in the lessons have significant benefits in visualizing, embodying, saving time and facilitating lecture. There are a small number of pre-service teachers who think that it is more useful to write on the blackboard by stating that the blackboard is inherent in mathematics and prefer the traditional blackboard environment to smart board technology. In line with the results of the research, the weak and strong aspects of the use of smart board technology in mathematics lessons are discussed. As a suggestion for future studies, it can be given to pre-service teachers to prepare different activities using smart board for mathematics lesson and to create a discussion environment on them.
