Innovative Thinking Skills A Scale Development Study for Vocational High School Students

The importance given to innovation, which is accepted as the pioneer of competition and progress, is increasing day by day. In order for innovation to be realized, individuals who have innovative thinking and therefore innovative thinking skills are required. However, no scale was found to measure innovative thinking skills at home and abroad. For this reason, in this study, it was aimed to develop a scale for measuring innovative thinking skills for vocational high school students, with the idea that the level of innovative thinking skills needed to determine the level of innovative thinking skills of young people who will shape the future. The research was carried out on 400 students studying in the furniture and interior design departments of vocational high schools in the 2019-2020 academic year in Balıkesir provinces and districts. Data were collected in November and December 2019. Since the implementation process of the relevant was carried out before January 2020, the ethics committee permission was not applied. In the research, the scale development stages consisting of 10 stages specified in the related literature were followed. As a result of the research, a valid and reliable scale consisting of three dimensions and 13 proposals in 5-point Likert type was determined to measure the innovative skills of vocational high school students. The first dimension of the scale consisting of the first 6 items was named as “vision of innovation”, the second dimension consisting of items 7-10 was named “entrepreneurial spirit” and the last dimension consisting of items 11-13 was “opportunity oriented”. The explained variance value of the items included in the “vision of innovation” dimension is 27.448%, the explained variance value of the items included in the “entrepreneurial spirit” factor is 24.656% and the explained variance value of the items in the “opportunity focus” dimension is 16.166%. These three factors, which are included in the scale of innovative thinking skills, cover 68.27% of the total variance. As a result of the reliability analysis, the reliability coefficient of the “vision of innovation” dimension is .916, the dimension of “entrepreneurial spirit” is .864 and the dimension of “opportunity focus” is .770. The total reliability coefficient of the scale was calculated as .916 and the scale was found to be a reliable measurement tool.
