Evaluation of Opinions of Izmir Democracy University Faculty of Fine Arts Department of Musicology Students on Piano Education


This study aims to research the general state of the piano education in Faculty of Fine Arts in Turkey and has the purpose of contributing to the piano education by suggesting new ways and ideas. In the study, the current situation of the piano education given in the Musicology Department, the importance of using piano in ability to read notes and opinions of the students on piano education have been researched. In addition, opinions about what method-book used in piano education are tried to be determined. The universe of the research is the students of Izmir Democracy University Faculty of Fine Arts Department of Musicology. The sample of the study consists of 55 students who are studying at the 1st and 2nd grade of Izmir Democracy University Faculty of Fine Arts Department of Musicology. In order to collect data, a five-scale Likert type questionnaire was applied and related sources were scanned. Basic statistical techniques were used to process the data. As a result of the data obtained and explained by basic statistical methods; 55 students studying at the 1st and 2nd grade of Faculty of Fine Arts Department of Musicology stated that piano lessons held 1 hour a week should be 2 hours a week, the electronic pianos in the study rooms should be increased in number, students should be able to work on electronic pianos with headphones and work without disturbing each other, the opening concerts and choir festivals events etc. in higher education institutions should be reported, piano teachers should inform the students about the works, period and composers they will give In the course, they should perform harmonic analysis and vocalize in a way to give 1 example, easy school songs performed in elementary schools should be included and they should be given the ability to play accompanied by those works. the piano lesson rooms are insufficient in number, the pianos are not enough to meet the needs in terms of numbers and they cannot follow the practices in other institutions related to piano education. 55 piano students stated that the status of playing the musical works belonging the international music era is Classical, Baroque, Romantic, Contemporary and Renaissance, respectively. In addition, piano students stated that they play the pieces of educational music in the piano lessons just to give an example and Contemporary Turkish Music works are not included. They stated that the accompaniment of easy melodies in the solfege education lesson is not involved in playing the piano, the works whose solfege was read are not played with the piano, they cannot place the finger numbers required for easy connection to the next chord while playing the piece and they cannot use the pedal correctly and effectively in their chord attachments. Various suggestions have been made for these results.
