Analysis of Texts in Turkish Textbooks in the Context of Ecocriticism

Environmental problems are no longer just environmental scientists' problems and have started to concern all areas. Literature also aims to raise awareness of environmental issues by using its influence on societies. In the narratives that conform to the ecocriticism that emerges as a result of this thought, the approach and tendency of removing the human from the center of the text is sensed. Again, there is the abolition of the infinite privilege afforded to the human subject which supports this situation. According to the ecocriticism, which centers on the reflection of nature in literature, an environmental awareness must be created with literature for a sustainable world. In this context, it is aimed to examine the texts in Turkish textbooks. Textbooks are the most effective material of classroom learning, and the quality of the texts in textbooks is very important. It is also known that the individual’s experiences and awareness gained from the age of the child become personality during adulthood. For this reason, love of nature and the idea of respecting nature's right to life should be gained from the age of the child. In this study was carried out by the Ministry of Education in the 2019-2020 school year in the second tier of primary education (5,6,7. and 8. Class) the texts in the theme of “Nature and Universe” in Turkish textbooks were examined in the context of ecocriticism. The textbooks were accepted as one document and were created using the study document analaysis method. The characters discussed in the texts are narratives that help the child to identify, that enable children to love nature and make it easier to look at nature with a conscious eye, the way nature is reflected as content, the appearance of human-nature integrity in the use of language, and the fictionalization of the modeled self. The findings were evaluated in the context of ecocriticism and presented with content analysis. As a result, although the texts in the primary school second-tier Turkish textbooks have qualities suitable for ecocriticism, it was determined that the number of these texts is not sufficient. The selected texts generally have an environmental approach but because of situations where fictions are quickly resolved, progress from a one-way point of view, or are not woven with deep enough meanings it has been seen that they do'nt address the needs of their readers and they do not stimulate the curiosity of their readers about critical approach to the environment.
