Profession Preferences of Gifted Students


The purpose of this study is to find out about the professions which the secondary school students who are describe with gifted and are trained in SAC (Science and Art Center) would prefer in the future and determine their thoughts on the personal characteristics of the people within these professions, the professions they are in and the professionals they are sympathizing with. In the study, the consecutive pattern from the mixedmethod modelswasused.Firstofall,“CareerandTalentDevelopmentSelf-EfficacyScale”developed to determine the career and ability development self-efficacy levels of middle school students, was applied to SAC students. It was examined whether the scores obtained according to this scale differed by gender, the type of attending school and the level of class. Then, it was revealed for gifted students what the profession preferences are, how they define the characteristics of the professions they prefer, what the characteristics of the people who will do the profession, and what the professions they think are close to the profession they want to choose. The study group of the research consists of 198 middle school students studying in 4 different SAC in the Mediterranean region in the 2018-2019 academic year. While collecting quantitative and qualitative data of the research, participants were determined according to criterion sampling from a purposeful sampling. “CTDSS” and semi-structured interview form were used as a data collection tool. The quantitative data obtained were analyzed using percentage, frequency, arithmetic mean, dependent groups t-test and ANOVA. In addition, qualitative data were evaluated with content analysis. As a result of the research, it was observed that the career and talent development of gifted secondary school students are at a very good level in terms of self-efficacy. In addition, it was determined that they preferred the professions related to the field of medicine the most, had sufficient information about the professions they preferred, could count the characteristics of the people who would do the profession, and that had sufficient knowledge about similar professions they wanted to choose.
