Chemistry Lesson for Secondary School Students

Chemistry lessons are given at the secondary stage in formal education institutions in Turkey. Chemistry is a branch of science that concerns all areas of daily life and facilitates human life. The awareness of the individuals who will specialize in different areas of life in the future to form the society and meet the needs of the society is important in contrast to the chemistry course, in which basic information about the science of chemistry is given. The research was prepared in order to determine the awareness of students studying at secondary education institutions about the course of chemistry, their perspective to the course and to offer suggestions to those concerned with the data obtained. The study was conducted on the basis of data collected from public and private secondary schools in Çanakkale in the spring semester of 2020. The study was conducted with phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods that can help people to develop solutions to many different problems by using the situations and events they encounter, which are expressed as phenomenology. A total of 874 students participated in the study, and 608 students were able to develop metaphors about the chemistry course. The metaphors developed by the students regarding the course of chemistry were collected in three categories. These; 41.77% are negative, 33.2% positive and 25% neutral. When the metaphors are analyzed in terms of gender variable, 33.53% of female students and 32.86% of male students are positive; 30.33% of male students, 20.61% of female students; 45.84% of female students and 37.10% of male students have developed positive metaphors. State and private school students developed the most negative metaphor, then neutral metaphor and least positive metaphor, and there was no difference in the metaphors developed in the two school types. In the research, it was seen that the most life metaphor was developed in all three categories.
