Investigation of Middle School Students' Mathematical Problem Solving Skills Based on Grade Level

The aim of this study is to reveal how mathematical problem-solving skills and problem-solving skills of middle school 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students differ according to grade level. A total of 59 students, 17 of which were in 5th grade, 14 in 6th grade, 14 in 7th grade, 14 in 8th grade, participated in the study. This study was designed according to the screening study, which is a quantitative research method. The data were obtained from the answers given by students to 8 different problems prepared by 7 primary school mathematics teachers who are experts in their fields. The obtained data were analyzed by means of the descriptive analysis method, using percentages and frequencies. According to the results obtained from the study, the students in the lower grades were below the desired level, which is defined as being able to solve at least half of the questions in terms of problem solving levels. Within the scope of the study, it was also determined that there was a similarity between 5th and 6th grade students and between 7th and 8th grade students in problem solving skills. On the other hand, it was specified that the problem solving skills of 6th and 7th grade students were at quite different levels, and problem solving skills made a leap after the 6th grade. In summary, it was determined that problem solving skills increased after 6th grade. According to the findings obtained from the students' solutions, it was concluded that 5th and 6th grade students used more picture graphics and modeling methods than 7th and 8th grade students.
