Toplumsal cinsiyet eşitliği sosyo-kültürel ve sosyo-ekonomik yapıyla doğrudan ilişkilidir. Bu yapıya etki eden ve şekillendiren bir unsur olarak mekân önemlidir. Şehir planlama meslek alanı ise mekânı şekillendirmesi yönüyle bu iki yapıya etki etmektedir. Dolayısıyla şehir planlama mesleği toplumsal cinsiyet eşitliğini sağlamaya yönelik öneriler geliştirmelidir. Bu kapsamda mesleğin cinsel yönelimlerin beklentilerini dikkate alması ve sorun alanlarını çözmesi hem toplumsal cinsiyet eşitliğini hem de herkes için kentin üretilmesini sağlayacaktır.  Bu çalışma Türkiye’nin önemli illerinden biri olan İzmir’de yapılan anket çalışması kapsamında toplumun herhangi bir bireyi olarak LGBT  bireylerin kentsel alanda görünemedikleri (closeted oldukları) noktaları ortaya koymak ve kent planlamanın yapabileceklerine yönelik önerilerde bulunmak amaçlanmıştır. Metinde, Türkiye’de kentsel/kırsal planlama çalışmalarında bugüne kadar odaklanılmayan bir konu olan LGBT bireylerin kentsel yaşamlarını nasıl sürdürdüklerine ilişkin değerlendirmeler yapılabilmesi için ülkenin LGBT bireylere bakışı ve sosyal ve ekonomik özellikleri verilecek ve yine ankete verdikleri cevaplar doğrultusunda LGBT bireyleri de içeren kentin nasıl olması gerektiği tartışmaya açılacaktır. Metin, aşağıda LGBT bireylerin kentle ilişki kurma biçimlerine yönelik durumunu, ankete dayalı çalışmanın yöntemini, anket yapılan bireylerin özelliklerini ve bu bireylerin İzmir nüfusu içindeki yerini, LGBT bireyleri içeren kentin özelliklerini ve sonuç bölümlerini içermektedir.

Gender equality is directly related to the socio-cultural and socio-economic structure. Space is important as an element that affects and shapes this structure. The city planning profession, on the other hand, affects these two structures in terms of shaping the space. Therefore, the city planning profession should develop proposals to ensure gender equality. In this context, the profession's taking into account the expectations of sexual orientations and solving the problem areas will ensure both gender equality and the production of the city for everyone. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the points where LGBT individuals as any member of the society cannot be seen (closed) in the urban area and to make suggestions about what urban planning can do within the scope of the survey study conducted in İzmir, one of the important provinces of Turkey. In the text, evaluations will be made about how LGBT individuals continue their urban lives, which has not been focused on in urban/rural planning studies in Turkey until now. For this purpose, the society's view of LGBT individuals and the social and economic characteristics of LGBT individuals will be given. And as a result, how the the city should be including LGBT individuals involved will be opened to discussion. The text includes the status of LGBT individuals regarding the way they relate to the city, the method of the survey-based study, the characteristics of the individuals surveyed and the position of these individuals in Izmir's population, the characteristics of the city that includes LGBT individuals, and the conclusions
