SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES AND ATTITUDES TOWARDS VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN FOR PROTECTINF HONOR: A RESEARCH ON UNIVERSITY YOUTH

Violence against women is one of the most important social problems both in the world and Turkey. One of the alleged causes of violence against women is the phenomenon of honor which is a product of patriarchal culture and traditions; and aims to subordinate women and destroys women's freedom. In the honor culture, women are subjected to verbal, psychological, sexual and physical violence in the name of honor, and even victims of honor killings. The aim of this study is to determine whether the attitudes of university students, who will shape the social structure in the future, towards violence against women in the name of honor, differ according to socio-demographic factors such as gender, class level, family income level, region of origin, parental education level. The research was conducted with 662 individuals who are studying in different departments of Sivas Cumhuriyet University. The sample was selected by random sampling technique. The personal information form, the Attitudes toward Violence against Women for Protecting Honor Scale (AVWPHS) developed by Işık and Sakallı-Uğurlu (2009) are used as a data collection tool. Data are analyzed by independent sample-t test for analyzing differences between two groups in terms of attitudes toward violence against women for protecting honor and one way ANOVA analysis for three and more groups. According to the findings, students do not approve of violence against women in the name of honor in general; but males, 1st and 2nd grade students and students whose mothers are illiterate have more positive views on violence against women in the name of honor. Furthermore there is no difference between the groups according to income level, region of origin and father education level.
