Problems in the Education of Refugee Students (Example of Sivas)


The aim of this study is to determine the problems experienced in the education of refugee students in Sivas province and to propose a draft program that can be employed in their education. Phenomenology, which is a qualitative research design, was used in the study. The research data were obtained through interviews with teachers from schools located in Sivas provinceattended by refugee students. Maximum variation sampling and criterion sampling were used in the selection of the study group. To reveal the similarities and differences between the problems encountered during the education of refugee students based on their educational levels, 23 teachers from three separate schools offeringelementary, middle, and high school education in which refugee students are concentrated were interviewed in separate sessions. Qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis. In content analysis, data are relationally analyzed based on similarities and differences. The analysis of the data obtained in the study showed that the problems experienced in the education of refugee students are language problem, adaptation problem, motivation problem, and curriculum problem. It can be concluded that language problem is at the center of the problems experienced in the education of refugee students. Language problem brings many problems with it. The interviews indicated that refugee students cannot speak Turkish, do not understand what is told, and therefore they cannot communicate. Inability to communicate has brought about important educational problems. Based on these qualitative results, principles were put forward for a more systematic, sustainable program that could be a solution to the problems experienced in the education of refugee students.
