AN INVESTIGATION of MALE ACADEMICS’ GENDER ROLE STRESS

In addition to the demographic and anatomic characteristics coming from birth, that is, biological sex; humans are attributed to some roles, responsibilities and duties by the society called gender. Gender generates inequality between women and men. Gender roles, formed by gender inequality, is a phenomenon not only effecting women, but also men. For instance, as a result of these roles, men cannot express their feelings, they undertake financial responsibilities. So, they practise their masculinities with some actions and expressions. These personal or interpersonal conflicts cause stress for men. This study aims at analysing the stress levels of male academics stemming from masculine gender roles in terms of various variables. For this purpose, a scale was applied to 68 male academics working at Ondokuz Mayıs University in Samsun province. The participants of the study were chosen by criterion sampling and convenience sampling methods, which are two of the purposeful sampling methods. In this quantitative study, data were collected by the Masculine Gender Role Stress Scale (MGRSS) developed by Bayar, Avcı and Koç. In order to reveal whether the variable marital status effect the stress average point of male academics stemming from masculine gender roles, Independent Samples t-Test was applied to the data and the test showed no significant statistical difference. In order to specify the difference between the variable educational backgrounds and the stress average points of male academics stemming from masculine gender roles, Kruskal-Wallis Test was applied to the data and the results showed no significant statistical difference, either. Moreover, to find out whether the variable having taken gender equality education or not affect the stress average points of male academics stemming from masculine gender roles, Mann Whitney U Test was applied and the results showed no significant statistical difference. This situation is an indication showing that gender mechanism in a society is present at each and every male in some way and is a cause for males for stress.
