THE EFFECT OF CLIMATE CHARACTERISTICS ON LEARNING AND TEACHING PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS AT HIGH SCHOOLS: A CASE STUDY OF SANLIURFA


Climate, which is one of the characteristics of the natural environment, affects many social and economic activities of human beings. One of the human activities affected by the climate is education and training. Whether the climatic characteristics are harsh or not is one of the most important factors affecting educational activities. In addition, variability of climate elements depending to seasons, months and days has an important impact on the motivation of students and teachers who are two main elements of education and training activities. In this study, the effects of climatic characteristics on the education and training activities at the high school education level within the borders of Sanliurfa province was revealed. The main purpose of the research is to contribute to the planning of education-training activities by revealing how climatic characteristics that prevalent in provincial boundaries, affects students and teachers, and also its advantages and disadvantages depending to the seasons. Using the stratified sampling method within the boundaries of the province of Sanliurfa, 10 high schools consist of 5 different types situated in different geomorphological units (mountain, plateau, plain) and elevations with different climatic characteristics were identified. In these schools, a total of 329 questionnaires were conducted to 228 students and 101 teachers. The data obtained from the questionnaires were analyzed with statistical methods and the results were obtained. The participants stated that climate has a positive effect on education in transportation and school location, while it has a negative effect on course performance. According to the results of the survey, 56.15% of the students and 66.34% of the teachers stated that the climatic characteristics prevailing in Sanliurfa have a negative effect on educational activities. 32% of the students and 35% of the teachers stated that climatic characteristics negatively affect the lesson performance. While the 46% of students stated that the season with the highest performance is winter, 28% stated that it is spring, 21% is autumn and 5% is summer, and in the same way 46% of teachers stated that it is winter, 36% is autumn, 18% is spring and 1% is summer.
