SYRIAN REFUGEES WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF MISLABELIZATION

Individuals who are pretended to have committed crimes and misdemeanors are exposed to ‘mis-labeling’. This can sometimes originate in factors such as subculture, race or ethnicity in individuals who have been exposed to mis-labeling. In this study made with the justification that Syrian refugees faced with a similar situation in Turkey, mislabeling attitudes towards Syrians, sizes of the attitudes towards the attribution of victimization and denial of citizenship to Syrian were investigated. Data collected by using ‘Attitude Scale of Turkey’s citizens for Confering Citizenship and Labeling of Syrian, with a total of 902 persons specified in the quota and simple random sampling in the southern cities such as Hatay, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Mardin and Diyarbakır where Syrian aslyum seekers most lived was analyzed. It was found that attitudes towards mis-labeling and non-citizenship of Syrians are very high and these attitudes differ significantly according to the variables of ethnic belonging, age, gender, educational background, accupation and income status. It was determined that eight out of every ten people in the research group had mis-labeling attitudes towards Syrians and seven out of ten thought that Syrians were victims. In addition, nine out of ten people showed an attitude of non-granting citizenship to Syrians. The most strong mislabeling attitude towards Syrians in Turkey have been seen in people of Turkish origin. However, contrary to expectations, it was seen that those who expressed themselves as Arabs also made mislabeling.
