STONEMASONRY SIGNS IN AHLAT STRUCTURES OF SELJUQ AND ILKHANID PERIOD

Ahlat district of Bitlis is one of the important cities of Turkish- Islamic civilization. To the east of the region is Lake Van, Adilcevaz to the north and Tatvan to the south. Ahlat is known as Kubbet-ül İslam in history. In Ahlat, the Umayyads, Abbasids, Marwanas, Ahlatshahs, Ayyubids, Seljuks, Mongols, Ilkhanıds, Aqkoyuns, Safavids and Ottoman Empire were dominant in the region. There have been many architectural works since these periods. The presence of andesite tuff stone known as Ahlat stone in the region has made it necessary to make the works with this stone. One of the most important characteristics of Ahlat is the training of a large number of architects, tombstone mason and stonemasons. It is known that the architects of Ahlat gave their works in their own regions and in various parts of Anatolia. The majority of the tombstone and architectural stonemason in the region is noteworthy. But the stonemasons and their signs were not sufficiently reflected in scientific publications. When the works in the region are examined, a large number of stonemason marks (signatures) on stones on structures are noteworthy. However, these signs are of different shape and have been used all over the structures. The stonemason signatures were also used in medieval works and later periods. It is possible to find similar examples of stonemasons seen in Ahlat in different periods in Central Asia, Anatolia and Europe. With this study, it is important to determine the stonemasons and signatures of Ahlat in the Van Lake Basin in the Middle Ages and to reveal the domains of the people in the background of the development of Turkish Architecture. Thus, traces of Turkish architectural history in the region can be traced through the stonemasons ' signatures.
