AN EXAMINATION OF RAFADAN TAYFA WATCHED BY PRESCHOOLERS IN TERMS OF GENDER


The aim of this study is to examine the cartoon of Rafadan Tayfa that preschoolers prefer watching in terms of gender. The research model is determined as a case study, one of the qualitative research methods. The study group consisted of 344 children which were attended to kindergartens of primary schools in 2017-2018 academic year in Uşak and 20 chapters of Rafadan Tayfa cartoon (between World Record & Yumak’s Cabin). In order to collect data Determination Form of Cartoons Watched by Children and Their Opinion and Evaluation Form of Cartoons for Preschoolers In Terms of Gender were used. In the evaluation form, there are the categories of cartoon characters' clothes, occupations, sharing of duties inside and outside the home, personality traits, children's games and children's toys categories. In each category, information is provided on how the elaboration of male and female, girls and boys in cartoons. According to the results of the research, Rafadan Tayfa is one of the top 5 preferred cartoons for children. It is determined that there were 11 male characters and 2 female characters in the examined sections. While each of the male characters was observed in professions such as tradesmen, lawyers and directors, female characters were not observed in any occupations. It has been observed that male and female characters act together in the activities they do at home and they are assisted in household chores that require power. In the out-of-home activities, while female characters were observed to bring food and sewing activities, male characters were observed in 11 different activities from paint production to traffic responsibility. It has been determined that the female characters in the cartoon had anxious and helpful personality traits, while the men were helpful, enthusiastic, intelligent and curious. In the games played in the cartoons, male characters were observed in 10 different games such as match, long jump and spinning top competition, while female characters were observed only in the theater. Among the findings, male characters played different toys such as balls, spinning tops, robots, and female characters did not play with toys.
