A SEMIOLOGICAL APPROACH TO ÜMİT ÜNAL’s CINEMA: A SEMIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE FILM “ARA”

This study focuses on feature-length movie “Ara” by Ümit Ünal (2008) which draws attention due to it is in New Turkey Cinema and has a fiction that cuts the continuity. The movie which focuses on the relationship between four adults in the metropolis and the theme of cheating, highlights the issue of individualization in the world. While four good friends maintain their existing relationships, they conduct relationships with different dimensions and mediate the situation of “to caught in the middle”. In this study, “alienation” is processed by means of semiotics through spaces and individual interests and the meaning of the movie and the positioning points of the characters in this process, the use of indicators and codes are examined. The aim of applying semiotics to cinema is to ensure that the basis of cinema as in other fields of visual arts may be based on indicators, and that these indicators are revealed by semiotic analysis. While the video narration director squeezes the director into narrow patterns, semiotics helps to convey the desired emotion to the audience by loading meanings to each object and word. The details of the movie which includes the East-West synthesis, the exit points of the characters and especially the bilateral relations are examined and the possibility of breaking the current cycle is discussed. The introduction of semiotics in Turkish cinema as in other country cinemas constitutes important evidence that developments in our country are closely monitored in the changing world order. This movie, directed by Ümit Ünal in 2008, draws attention as an example of the adaptation of semiotics to cinema, revealing the suitability of cinematography to semiotic analysis and the opportunities offered to analysts.
