A NEW DISADVANTAGEOUS GROUP FOR THE 21ST CENTURY: AGEING PRISONERS

In the last century there is a rapid increase in the elderly population. Similarly, an increase in criminal behavior and number of convictions has been observed. This study aims to present the multidimensional problems experienced by the increasing number of elderly prisoners in prisons together with the current data from the country and abroad and to present a photograph of the problems that are waiting for our country in the coming years. In addition to the problems caused by old age, there are some problems caused by prisons. Chlamydia, AIDS, syphilis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, tuberculosis such as microorganism and infection-transmitted diseases, prisons due to architectural and capacity problems, physical difficulties due to elderly people are exposed more often. Psychological problems such as anxiety, fear and depression in the prison and the social problems associated with the family and environment of older convicts are other important problems faced by older prisoners. All these problems experienced by the convicts cause serious financial and social costs. Nowadays, although alternative punishment methods such as house arrest, probation and conciliation are preferred to minimize these costs, an inclusive approach is needed to find solutions to the economic, physical, psychological and social problems of the elderly individuals in prison.
