MEASURING ORGANISATIONAL CYNICISM IN LABOUR HEALTH AND WORK SAFETY PROFESSION: QUALITATIVE CONTENT ANALYSIS

The study seeks to reveal in detail the cynicism experienced in the occupational health and safety profession. To this end, the sample of this study was selected through purposive sampling method. The sample consists of ten (10) medical employees working in Mersin province. Eight (8) of these are occupational labour health and work safety experts, one (1) is radiology technician, and one (1) is on-site nurse. The data were collected by in-depth interview. Qualitative content analysis was employed to analyze the data. Two (2) scales were used in the study. The first is cynicism scale with three (3) dimensions and fourteen (14) questions, and the other is demographic scale with six (6) questions. The cynicism scale was developed by Beldek (2015). The dimensions of the cynicism scale are cognitive cynicism (five questions), affective cynicism (six questions), and behavioral cynicism(three questions). The scale questions were transformed into semi-structured interview questions and addressed to the participants. The cynicism findings of the study are presented as main themes and sub-themes. The two (2) main themes are problems about the organization and problems about the personnel. The problems about the organization (sub-themes) include not complying with the laws/standards and procedures, stress, and negligence. The problems about the personnel (sub-themes), on the other hand, include abuse, communication problems, and negligence. One of the most striking results of the study is that the most frequent cynicism sub-theme is not complying with the laws/standards and procedures. The results of this study are expected to contribute both to the literature and to the practice (the occupational health and safety profession).
