THE EFFECT OF FRENCH ON TURKISH IN THE PROCESS OF WESTERNIZATION


Turkish is regarded as one of the oldest languages in the world and it is a language belonging to the Ural-Altaic family of origin and it has been influenced by many different languages throughout its historical development. This process which started with the Soğdaca, Chinese influences in Uyghur Turkish period continued to receive many words resulted from religions and migrations during the history. Islamism accepted Turkish have met uncountable words which have come from Arabic and Persian and this process continued increasingly till the westernization effect that began to develop in the eighteenth century. During westernization process, this impact was quite obvious in the science, technical, military and social issues. However, especially French has influenced the Turkish substantially among the other languages. Although this situation is regarded as a wrong, it continues to increase even today. Ottoman administrators who accepted the superiority of Europe in science despite the some conflict that came from janizaries and ulemas started to adopt their life to the westerns’ cultural and social differences. During that time the cultural and artistic effect of France densely lasted until the Second World War and these effects influence technique, language and literature. After that time, they left their position to English and American cultural interaction with the establishment of the NATO.Approximately 150 years (1800-1950) in the direction of the French-Turkish interaction, almost 6,000 French-speaking words were settled in our language. In this process, the most powerful translators are intellectuals sent to France as a student ( les jeunes turcs), some of the schools such as Mekteb-i Sultani ( Lycée de Galatasaray) which used the French as a language of education ın the process of westernization, two major cultures have influenced each other extensively in a certain period of time. By taking into account the traces of the French culture that settled our culture with the words, we will try to evaluate the effect of the French language on the Turkish language in this long and interesting period and additionally we will examine its consequences.
