THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS SOCIAL MEDIA USE INTENSITY AND THEIR TENDENCY TO AGGRESSION


Social media have especially occupied a substantial part of young people's daily life. However, it is possible to say that it plays a decisive role in the life and relationships of young people. The aim of this study is to reveal the relationship between the intensity of university students’ using social media and their tendency to violence. For this purpose Buss & Perry’s (1992) Aggression Questionnaire is used. Within this context, it is determined the connection between social media use intensity and. Furthermore, in order to determine the intensity of university students’ social media use Ellison et al’s (2007) questionnaire was translated into Turkish and used. In this study the relationship between social media use intensity and aggression is analysed by using questionnaire. The difference between the points of sub-dimension and total variables is analysed with Man-Whitney U Test and the relationship between social media use intensity and aggression level is analysed with Spearman Correlation Analysis. According to the result of the study, social media use intensity and aggression tendency of participands varies according to gender, the faculty they study and the number of virtual friends. While there is no correlation between social media use level and physical aggression, anger and verbal aggression sub-dimensions of aggression factor, it is related to hostility sub-dimension. Moreover, it is concluded that there is high positive correlation between aggression factor sub-dimensions with each other.
