Examining Turkish Comedy Movies in Terms of Orta Oyunu

Orta oyunu, which is a type of Traditional Turkish Theatre, is a play that is performed without following a written text and the stage is surrounded by the audience. Having a limited setting or not having a setting at all gives plenty of space and freedom for the play. Orta oyunu, which is similar to Karagöz, also have the dialogue (muhavere), the main plot (fasıl) and conclusion (bitiş) parts. Even though the stories might change, the lead characters are always Kavuklu and Pişekar. Orta oyunu had taken it's dramatic form known today in 19th Century and started losing it's popularity in the presence of the westernization movement introduced with the Tanzimat Reform Era. Actors that instantly became unemployed started performing at a specified location and within the scope of a certain text to be able to keep up with this new theatre concept. These conditions provoking the birth of improvisational theatre that completely disappeared with the proclamation of the republic. Coffeehouses or other places, where the general public were watching traditional folk dramas such as Karagöz, meddah, orta oyunu etc., were replaced by the movie theaters. These theatrical plays that have created a certain custom also formed codes in the collective unconsciousness of the society. In the first days of Turkish Cinema; it can be seen that certain properties of orta oyunu have been applied to comedy movies considering the presence of actors coming from the tradition of orta oyunu and eulogy shows, and considering the strong influence of theatre approach of the era instead of the arguments of cinema over the atmosphere of movies. It can be said that orta oyunu have affected Turkish Cinema indirectly from the viewpoint of methods that are making the audience laugh rather than the structure of the play. Comedy movies in Turkish Cinema are being examined with regards to orta oyunu in chronological order based on the statement made by Ertem Eğilmez on the screen credits of the movie called Şabanoğlu Şaban; "This film is the first adaptation of traditional Turkish performing arts where everything is based on mimic and humor".
