THE MEANING DUALITY IN THE CONCEPT OF ALIENATION: A STUDY ON GRADUATE THESES

The aim of this study is to draw attention to the meaning duality which is revealed during the handling of the phenomenon of alienation in scientific studies and to offer suggestions for the conceptualization studies that will be carried out in order to eliminate the duality. At this point, expression of Passive Alienation for the development of alienation phenomenon outside of the individual's will and consciousness and Active Alienation expression for the state's development, partly within the will and consciousness of the individual have been proposed and these statements were used to make a categorical distinction within the research. To make the duality of meaning in the use of the concept of alienation in scientific studies in Turkey visible, a statistical cast was made by examining the graduate theses on this subject. A descriptive study was conducted and a general screening model was used. After the theses which were written in the foreign language and unauthorized access were eliminated, the research was conducted with 215 theses. At the end of the study, it was detected that 186 graduate and 29 doctoral level studies had been prepared for alienation. Of these, 100 were studied in the Social, Human and Administrative Sciences Field where the main area of discussion of the phenomenon of alienation and 115 in other fields. From the absence of a measurement assessment tool for the meaning of Passive Alienation of alienation phenomenon, it was examined that how many of the empirical studies were theoretical and it was observed that 133 studies were empirical and 82 studies were theoretical. The conceptualization of theoretical studies also includes theses that refer to the meaning of Active Alienation carried out by Seeman for the first time. When the sample is examined from this point of view, it was understood that the meaning of Active Alienation in the study of alienation in 166 study and Passive Alienation in 49 studies were used. The findings of the study revealed that there is a contradictory picture in the scientific studies about the meaning of the phenomenon of alienation. In this case, it is seen that the studies carried out with the same concepts will create a confusion about the quality of the phenomenon of alienation by creating different meanings and results. For this reason, a new conceptualization study on the phenomenon of alienation needs to be made an objective.
