A FIELD RESEARCH ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BELIEF-MUSIC IN TUNCELI ALEVISM


Music practices build a bridge between belief about cultural memory and social values that comprise of verbal elements in the embodiment and transferring of Alevi belief in Tunceli. In Tunceli, where most of the population is Alevis and has a more homogeneous cultural structure compared to other regions that Alevis live in Anatolia, the most important field that would be consulted in the comprehension of information about the structure of mystical (inherent) Alawi belief tradition is undoubtedly the music culture. Music practices which integrate mostly around baglama in worship and social life, made it possible for belief system in Tunceli to transform into a common ground by the society and to convey the tradition up until today. Another feature which makes Tunceli special in terms of belief is sacred visiting places that are considered as holy by the community such as “Munzur Baba”, “Sultan Hıdır/Hızır Baba” and “Düzgün Baba”. These places which are visited by various reasons by the local community, indicate that Alevi belief in Tunceli has strong references in terms of mysticism. This region which contains many belief systems in Anatolian culture basin considering its historical, cultural and geographical structure, is also quite rich in terms of musical practices that integrate with belief. This study is a field research that was built upon the relationship between belief-music in Tunceli Alevism. In this region where the multicultural structure and traditional music styles shaped along with Alevism in historical process, make it valuable to research the organic relationship between music and belief. The focus of the study is to determine how the mystical and cultural discourses and practices regarding the region has a place in Alevi music understanding and which practices the relationship between belief and music brings along in intellectual and actual dimensions in Tunceli Alevism. The subject which was attempted to be researched with observation and personal interviews by using qualitative research methods, reveals the traditional music culture and the musical codes of the region with regards to its results.
