INVESTIGATION OF PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS OF WOMEN'S FOOTBOLCERS FIGHTING IN DIFFERENT LEAGUE


Objective: This study aims to analyse female footballers’ problem-solving skills according to the variables of age, educational status, leagues they play in and the years of sport. Materials and Method: 654 football players competing in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd women’s leagues in Turkey in different teams and different categories agreed to take part in this descriptive study. A question form to find out the participants’ defining characteristics and Problem solving Inventory (PSI) developed by Heppner and Petersen and adapted into Turkish by Şahin and Heppner (1993) were used as the tools of data collection in this study. Frequencies and percentages were used in analysing the data, and one-way Anova, Man Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis test were used in comparing the data. Significance was looked for at the level of p<0.05. All the analyses were done on SPSS v17.0 (SPSS Science, Chicago, IL, USA). Findings: The problem-solving perception of 18-21 age group was found to be high in the comparing of problem-solving skills of female footballers competing in different leagues according to age. Their problem-solving skills did not differ significantly on the basis of their levels of education. According to the leagues they played in, the footballers’ problem-solving skills of those who played in the 1st league were found to be higher. Conclusion: 42.4% of the participants in this study- which was performed to determine the problem-solving skills of female football players playing in different leagues and to compare them on the basis of a number of variables- were in 22-25 age group, 44% of them were high school graduates, 42.7% played in the 1st league and 28.9% had been doing sport for 6-7 years. The participants’ problem-solving skills differed according to the leagues they played in while their problem-solving skills did not differ significantly according to their levels of education and years of sport.
