SELF-HANDICAPPING LEVELS OF WAVESURF JUDGES

The aim of this study was to assess self-handicapping levels of wavesurf judges who serve in the Developing Sports Federation. Along with this, the subjects’ self-handicapping scores were statistically tested to examine the differences according to the gender, level of education, monthly income, and self-reported level of English proficiency. The participants (N=25) were active wavesurf judges. To collect the required data, 25-question "Self-Handicapping Scale" was used. The scale was developed by Jones and Rhodewalt and adapted to Turkish by Akin (2012). Since the number of subjects did not meet the assumption for normality (N<30), Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis H tests were used to determine differences between/among groups and the statistical significance level was set at p<.05. It was found that there was no statistically significant difference between the self-handicapping scores of the wavesurf judges at any categoric classification but it was found that the median self-handicapping score of the participants was as low as 38 which was clearly below the median score stated in the literature.
