Using Language Affirming Violence Against Woman In Press


In our study how violence against women takes place in the media and violence is legitimized/ banalised over the language used in the news is investigated. When news about violence against women is being reported in the press, one has to feel the social responsibility of the subject and act with such a feeling of responsibility. In our study, consequences of using “striking” statements used in the headings in presenting such kind of new for creating sensational emotions and attracting attention is discussed. Although violence against women is a global problem, in our country it is increasingly becoming a wound coming at the forefront. This study examined qualitatively the effects of the news about violence against women. In our research, the news that is published in Hürriyet, Sabah and Posta online newspapers between the dates of 1st November-1st December 2018 are examined. Research is made about the social equivalent of the headings selected in presenting the news about violence against women within the context of the “cultivation theory”. The words that are selected in the headings that are used in presenting news about violence against women are examined in detail in terms of language and style. As the subject is very delicate it is crucial to be objective in presenting the news and avoiding sensational expressions in terms of exposing the survivals of violence to secondary wounding. In the study by taking three newspapers publishing their news over the Internet under focusing glass it is observed that their headings used in the news about violence against women are being selected rather for being sensational. And delicacy of the subject is being neglected.
