STRESS COPING STRATEGIES OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS: THE ROLE OF COGNITIVE FLEXIBILITY AND SELF-REGULATION

The main aim of the current study is to examine the relationships among cognitive flexibility, self-regulation and coping strategies in university students and to investigate the predictive roles of cognitive flexibility and self-regulation on coping strategies. The participants of this study comprised 478 undergraduates (66% female and 33% male) from universities across the country. To collect data Cognitive Flexibility Inventory, Self-Regulation Scale and Coping Inventory Stressful Situations were applied as measures. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, independent samples t-test and multiple regression analysis were used in analyses of the data. The results showed that there is a positive relationship between cognitive flexibility and self-regulation and both variables correlated with task-oriented coping in a positive way and emotional coping in a negative way. On the other hand, avoidant coping had no correlation with cognitive flexibility and self-regulation. The findings from the multiple regression analysis in order to reveal what extent to cognitive flexibility and self-regulation together predict task-oriented coping indicated that the model as a whole is meaningful and the variables in the model explain 55% of the total variance of task-oriented coping. The findings from the multiple regression analysis in order to reveal what extent to cognitive flexibility and self-regulation together predict emotional coping indicated that the model as a whole is meaningful and the variables in the model explain 15% of the total variance of emotional coping. The research findings are discussed in the light of the literature, and some suggestions are proposed for mental health experts and researchers.
