THE EFFECT OF WEB 2.0 TOOLS TEACHING ON THE SELF-EFFICACY OF TEACHER CANDIDATES REGARDING EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY STANDARDS

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the introduction of Web 2.0 tools on the candidate teachers' self-efficacy towards instructional technology standards. The study group consisted of 100 prospective teachers studying in the 1st year of the Gazi University Faculty of Education during 2017-2018 academic year. The experimental design of the study is a single-factor group design with repetitive measurements. Self-Efficacy Scale for Educational Technology Standards developed by Şimşek and Yazar (2016) was used as data collection tool. Descriptive statistical techniques including mean, percentages, frequencies and standard deviation were used to analyze the data obtained from the research. Dependent and independent sample t tests of relational statistics techniques and Cohen’s d formula (for effect size) were also used. According to the results, introduction of Web 2.0 tools resulted in a significant increase in the self-efficacy levels of teacher candidates regarding educational technology standards (t(99)=-24.001; p<0.05) The obtained d value (3.50) shows that this increase has a very large impact value in practice. When the results related to the sub-dimensions of self-efficacy scale regarding educational technology standards are examined, we see that there is a significant increase in the self-efficacy levels of teacher candidates including all of the sub-dimensions namely “facilitating students' learning and encouraging creativity”, “design and development of learning environments and assessment activities suitable to digital age”, “pioneering the studying and learning approach of the digital age”, “being a model of digital citizenship” and “attending professional development and leadership activities”. It is determined that this increase has a large impact value. Considering all of the results; it is determined that Web 2.0 tools provides a significant and vital impact on the increase of self-efficacy levels of prospective teachers regarding educational technology standards. Hence, these tools should be taught to prospective teachers during the undergraduate education. A significant shortcoming in the field was eliminated by this study. This study is important for two reasons. First it demonstrates that Web 2.0 tools should be taken during Teaching Technologies and Material Design course, second it gives ideas to academics, subject matter experts and authorities.
