PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS' OPINIONS REGARDING TO THE STEAM DISCIPLINES


Qualified human need has led countries to change their education policies. Although developments in all fields have accelerated in the 21st century, developments in science, mathematics, technology and engineering are effective in every aspect of life and they play a very important role in solving the most urgent problems of humanity. At this point, art contributes to all these works in the context of aesthetics. The aim of this study was to investigate the perspectives of STEAM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics-Arts)-based education in elementary school 3rd grade students in STEAM fields. In this study, the qualitative dimension of a research using mixed method is given. The study group consisted of 3rd grade students studying in Afyonkarahisar Çobanlar Atatürk Primary School in 2016-2017 academic year. Research In order to improve the awareness of STEAM applications of 3rd grade elementary school students, the students were taught with the STEAM applications within the scope of Journey to the World of Living unit in the field of Living Things and Life in the curriculum of science education. The implementation process continued for seven weeks, three hours per week. After seven weeks, face-to-face interviews were conducted with semi-structured interview form with two students selected from all levels, one girl and one man from the upper, middle and lower level students among the study group students. At the end of the interviews, it is concluded that the disciplines of Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering are related to each other and that after STEAM application, they know that art is necessary in both these disciplines and in daily life.
