A Model Suggestion for Personalized Online Learning Environments by Learning Styles

The purpose of this experimental study is to propose a model by evaluating the effects of personalized online learning environments on the academic achievement of students according to different learning styles. The research was conducted on 60 first year engineering faculty students studying at a university in Ankara and taking courses on introduction to computers and programming. Two different online learning environments are designed for the study. Students have access to course materials by entering the online learning environment for 14 weeks in the without personalization features environment. In the other learning environment, personalized according to the VARK learning style model, the students follow the program according to their own learning style. The study looked at whether there was a difference between the academic achievements of the students who had been personalized according to their learning styles and the environments without personalization. In addition, it has been investigated whether the academic achievement of students who prefer to work with more than one learning style differ than the students who prefer a single learning style in the personalized environment. Experimental design with pre-test and post-test control groups was used in the study. The data collection tools are a 20-item multiple-choice test developed by the VARK learning style scale to determine the learning styles of students and to measure academic achievement, pre- and post-test developed by the researcher. In the analysis of the data, paired groups t test was used to determine whether there is a significant difference between the control and experimental groups and descriptive statistics such as arithmetic mean and standard deviation, and average scores. According to the results, among the academic achievements of the students there is a meaningful difference in favor of the students working in the personalized learning environment according to the learning styles. It was also found that the mix model with more than one learning style was effective in increasing the academic achievement of the students.
