DETERMINATION OF EDUCATIONAL NEEDS FOR MEDIA LITERACY OF THE PARENTS


Nowadays, when a large number of messages are transmitted from different media sources, the correct interpretation of the messages is of great importance in terms of being a conscious media literate. As a matter of fact, studies on this field emphasize the importance of being a conscious media literate. Families in the period when children meet with the media; has the potential to directly shape the awareness of media literacy in children.In order for mothers and fathers to guide their children to media literacy, they must first reach this awareness level. In this respect, it is important to provide media literacy education for the parents. It was aimed to determine the perceptions and educational needs of the parents of middle school students towards media literacy in this research. It was conducted as a descriptive study and designed as a qualitative research. Participants of the study are the parents of 20 students who attend secondary school in Afyonkarahisar province center. As a data collection tool, a questionnaire consisting of open ended questions was used. Content analysis method was used in the analysis of the obtained data. According to findings, a large majority of the parents have no knowledge of media literacy, and many families have expressed media literacy in the form of the correct use of communication tools and the attainment of the right information. Almost half of the families think that they are inadequate in the use of written and visual media and their children do not control their TV viewing and internet use behaviors. It is a known fact that all societies are under the influence of the media. In addition, children and their families should be considered as the most affected groups. According to the results of the research, parents should be educated about media literacy so that they need to be informed about this issue, their needs should be removed and a critical perspective towards the media should be gained. The design and implementation of a media literacy training program for parents in schools may resolve their needs and problems in this regard. In this program, the parents should be informed in using the media and given practical measures to be taken against the harmful situations that may be encountered in using it.
