INVESTIGATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SOCIOSCIENTIFIC ISSUES-BASED ANIMATIONS


The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of socioscientific issues-based animations on pre-service social studies teachers’ scientific habits of mind regarding socio-scientific issues. The sample consisted of 59 pre-service social studies teachers drawn from the first year of the study at Artvin Çoruh University. Within a quasi-experimental research design, the Scientific Habits of Mind Scale by Çalik and Coll (2012) was administered as pre- and post-test. The results of independent samples t-test between post-test mean scores of the experimental and control groups only showed a significant difference at ‘curiosity’ sub-factor in favor of the experimental one. In light of the results, the current study recommends that further studies employing qualitative or mixed methods should inquiry pre-service social studies teachers’ reasons of scientific habits of mind via socioscientific issues.
