As in other societies, the family institution has changed over time in Kazakhs. The elements that survive despite the change of the family institution are the concepts of otag (tenth), ocak (cooker), şanıraq (tenth pole), and dastarhan (floor table) which are integrated with the family. These concepts continue their historical, cultural and mythological meanings in Kazakh language and culture. It is seen that the concepts are indispensable elements of Kazakh culture by overlapping with symbols. The article is based on the analysis of data and findings of the oral history research data conducted in 2010 in the villages and cities Turkestan, Shymkent, and Almaty of Kazakhstan. Firstly, in-depth interviews revealed what symbolic concepts the interviewees used in their family definitions, and secondly, the symbolic expressions used in describing the Kazakh family were discussed with the concepts of "otbası" (family), "ocak" (cooker), "şanıraq" (tenth pole) and "dastarhan" (floor table) concepts were discussed with their cultural and mythological meanings. Interpretations, which were either generalizing or singular, were also included, as there were family descriptions in the memory of the interviewees. Kazakh interviewees expressed their experiences, what they saw, those that were inherited and the meaning codes they inherited through symbolic metaphors. The subject of the article, which establishes a link between history and cultural memory within the framework of the query, was examined with an interdisciplinary approach. As a result of the article, it was seen that the change of family institution can be directed by political administrations or shaped by cultural movements. The most powerful oppression period in the Kazakh family was the Tsarist and Soviet periods. Despite the influence of Russification and modernization in these periods, it was seen that the mythological and cultural meanings were preserved in the cultural memories of Kazakh people.
